Yesterday, While driving down the road, my wife calls me and asked me question about an NFL game.
Situation:
QB rolls out on a pass and crosses the line of scrimmage. He realizes that he is across the neutral zone an backs up into his back field in order to throw a forward pass down field. He was flagged for illegal forward pass. Is this a penalty in NFHS? I thought that any number of foward passes could be thrown as long as they originate behind the line of scrimmage? Not sure, any help out there?

No, it is not a penalty under Fed. rules, and the offense can throw as many forward passes as they want before any change of possession and if all passes originate in or behind the neutral zone (the feet of the passer must be behind/in the NZ). I have last year's rulebook with me, but the rule reference in that is 7-5-1.

REPLY: Just for completeness, this would have been a foul in an NCAA game as well. Likewise, NCAA rules also allow only one forward pass per down.
