Muffed snap on punt...punter retreats and picks up ball - turns and punts for a plus 10 kick. After the punt, the kicker is tackled by defense...is there still a roughing call?????

If not, how is this different from a QB muffing a shotgun snap....throwing a ball, getting hit and getting a roughing call?

Not necessarily. If there was a question that the punter was actually going to punt the ball, then he does not get the same protection. If the punter was running and then decided to punt the ball at the last second before contact, then I would say no way is that roughing.

That is not a real good comparison. Roughing the passer is different than roughing the punter. You can hit a passer after they have passed the ball under many circumstances. You cannot hit a punter that has established themselves as a punter unless you touch the ball (the person making the contact). These are really apples and oranges in the rules.

Every play is different than the one before; every punt play is diferent. There are rules which govern rough play, but it is flexible enough to allow the play to develop.

To give a definite answer, you would have to be there, or see a film clip of the play.

I agree with Rut.

If it was not obvious there was going to be a punt, roughing the kicker does not apply. Was a kick obvious? We could only rule on this if we saw the play.

Also, as Rut said, roughing the passer is very different from roughing the kicker. If A1 throws a pass, and he is immediately hit, this is not (usually) roughing, and it does not matter if a pass was imminent or not, yet if he legally kicked the ball, and it was apparent a kick was coming, then such a hit would be roughing.
