Question

3rd & 20 from A's 10 yd line. Running play gains 2. I threw a flag for facemask (15 yd.) We walked off an additional 15 from the end of the run and replayed the down making it 3rd & 3. Was this correct? At halftime we were questioned why it wasn't an automatic 1st down. I said that penalty didn't warrant an automatic first down and the distance didn't give them the first. Was I correct?

I would say yes, since it was a live ball foul, end of run/repeat down. if they don't mak eth line to gain its not a first. I believe the only autmatic is DPI...

You were correct. College rules allow for an automatic first down on personal fouls. High school rules don't and that is where the fans get confused.

Automatic first downs in NF are DPI and the 4 roughings, passer, kicker, snapper, and holder.

Yes, that's correct.

DPI and Roughings are the only automatic first downs. The other one you didn't mention is holder!

Warren's answer is correct. Only five automatics in FED football, and four of them are roughing penalties.

I had a 3rd and goal from the 5 a few weeks ago and an A runner got hit late out of bounds. Half the distance, replay third down. Pretty basic HS call, but for some reason everyone thinks that this is NCAA or the NFL and they think there should be a 1st down.

No replay on this though, Rich. This is a dead ball foul.

I agree, deadball foul so you shouldn't replay. Should be 4th down.
