How many games have you officiated this season thus far including all youth, sub varsity, and varsity games? I wanted to get a sense of how many games an avg official is working on a year to year.
Thus far i have officiated 45 games. |
7 varsty
7 middle school 7 Jv and Freshmen 30 Boys club game (Youth) Cbrockett |
First season - I did exactly 100 (begged for the final game when I totalled up my season and found I'd reached 99). 72 last year. By season's end, I'll have had 36 SubV, 3 V, and 39 PeeWee (78 total).

Youth League 26 Jr. High 15 JV 6 Varsity 2 Total 49 |
Tomorrow, a state semi-final (As a R) will be my 15th Varsity this year and 305th Varsity in 26 years.
|
Wow. I wouldn't have time to do that many games.
I had five scheduled before the season started and since have picked up 9 more, but it's my first year. I'd like to do a couple "dates" a week (whether I do one game or multiple on a single date) during the length of the season. |
Don't do pee wees any more. Have to save the knees.
Will probably wind up with 22-23 varsity plus a playoff game or two if chosen. And about 20 non-varsity including all levels. Working only only turf fields now, again because of the knees, so I probably won't have many, if any, more Jr High games. |
Looks like 23 games so far, with around 10 left to go.
I'm very curious how Jim's got over 20 varsity games. Is your association seriously understaffed? 'Round here, it's rare for an official to get more than one varsity game per week, and with a nine-week season (plus regional/state playoffs)... |
Yes we are very understaffed. This last Friday my Varsity crew consisted of myself (R), a back judge with 2 years, a linesman with 1 year, a line judge with 1 year, and a rookie in his first varsity game and 1st game at umpire....... Sometimes I feel like a baby sitter. I believe we had about 11 1st year guys working Varsity games Friday night.
But normally here a V1 official will get two varsity games each week. With the occasional double header or third night thrown in. With a ten week season they add up. Throw in the fact that we've had a few go down this year and a number of retirements (including two to D1 and 1 to the NFL). You work a lot of games. Double headers (not JV, then varsity) involving different schools are played at Seattle Memorial Stadium. Sometimes two games, 5 & 8. Sometimes 3 games starting in the afternoon. There are also occasional doubleheaders played at one or two other stadiums in the area. [Edited by Jim S on Oct 17th, 2004 at 09:14 PM] |

Ah, I remember the days when the legs would allow me to do that many games a season.
Start taking the joint juice or pills now guys. All that cartilidge you're wearing out needs to be replaced. You don't want to wind up having x-rays that make the technician ask if you've been running marathons all your life. |
6 Varsity Scrimmages
20 Varsity Games (Incl. 3 Playoff Games) 8 Subvarsity Games 38 Youth Games |
67 total games
11 Varsity 33 Sub varsity 23 Youth games |
I did 95 games total this year
5 of them were scrimmages 2 were working on the chain crew (one school in the area pays official to run the chains at their home games.) I had 9 varsity games (regular season). The rest were JV and below (79 games). Now if you want to add on the 26 basketball games so far this year and the 176 baseball games as well on top of my real job, then maybe we can discuss what is too much. 2 college + scrimmages
15 varsity + scrimmages 9 jv 6 freshman 12 middle school 9 pee wee |
About 50 games this past fall, plus a couple scrimmages. This included 9 varsity and about 20 youth games. The rest were sub-varsity (combination of freshman, reserve, and JV).
|
83 paid on-the-field assignments: 48 youth, 26 freshmen/JV, 9 varsity.
Plus one varsity rainout/tornado, one clock operator, one down-and-distance operator (playoff), and one chain crew (playoff). Plus 11 unpaid pre-season scrimmages, most of which were double-headers. Did 93 games last year...am slowing down. Am also taking glucosamine-chondroitin-MSM for the knees. Greatest pleasure was that 19 of the youth games were worked with my two sons, as a three-man crew. Fathers, get your son's into officiating! |

13 V Games
8 JV 32 Minor Football Games 2 Scrimmages 29 Games as a minor official, (timer, downsbox, yardsticks) This is probably the busiest season I'll ever have (I was the on call guy, if someone dropped out last second, I was always available to take the game). I don't think I'll have this kind of time next year. |
