Texas High School football at it's best, on national TV (ESPN2) tonight.

I highly recommend you guys watch this if you have a chance (or maybe record it). Southlake is number 1 in the country, but Ryan is pretty good on their own, and should be able to keep up. I believe these 2 schools have made the state semi's in each of the last 3 years.

SL is run by ex-UT QB Todd Dodge, and runs an exciting offense, calling most plays at the line of scrimmage.

Should be good officiating too. The white-hat will be our ex-president of our local chapter, Roy Kimberlin. He's about as good as they come. Umpire Randy Hall, HL Robert Frazer, LJ George Alden, and BJ Howard Shearer are all very experienced, very good officials as well.

I will watch it tonight, thanks for the heads up. Only goin with 5 man?

mcrowder Thu Oct 14, 2004 04:24pm

According to the assignment sheet, yes - 5 men on that crew. I'm surprised too.

Theisey Thu Oct 14, 2004 08:14pm

Up in the northeast, the game is Permian vs Lee
Anyone know where these schools are from?

(added 9:42)
Ah... I was on the wrong channel, Ryan/SLC is on too

They look pretty good from the small amount I've seen. The R could stand to skip the BBQ once in a while, though.

He definitely needs to lose some wait. Spit out the gum, take off the white wristband and stand still when giving the signals. I think the U is too far back sometimes. And what was the BJ doing on that incomplete call, first not his call and second he gave a half signal, looked pretty bad. Also they didn't make the white's QB take off the armstrong rubberband.

I really shouldn't comment because its not like I will ever get a TV game.

Right, TV games up this way are far and few.
But if anything, I watch mechanics and decide for myself if it was good, bad or could be better and then think about is that something you might have done or are doing.

One mechanic item I just saw was on a TD run by Ryan right at the goal line pylon, where was the wing (H) man? I believe he moved back up field maybe to the 3 or 4 yard line.
I thought about what I would do. I kept thinking, stay at the goaline and back away as needed but stay on the goal line extended. That area can be extremly dangerous for an official.
One thing for sure, there seems to be too many folks hanging around the sidelines between the 20 and the goal line. That makes me nervous about official safety if his ability to bail out is blocked.

Any rate, this is a good played game.

Question for you guys from Texas. I know they use NCAA rules in Texas, but doesn't even NCAA abide by the equipment rule? I noticed on numerous occasions that players didn't have their chin straps snapped. For a second, thought I was watching NFL on Friday nite.

Permian is from Odessa (seen "Friday Night Lights"?) and Lee is from Midland. Both schools in West Texas. And, it's been a rivalry since I was a kid.

Yes, we have equipment rules. They have to have it snapped by the RFP. However, the rules do prescribe a warning - penalties (timeouts) to be issued only if the player ignores the reminder.

On the other hand - I did not notice this at all. When were they not wearing their chinstraps?

I noticed the half-hearted incomplete from BJ and the odd mechanic on the TD as well. Maybe he felt the play was coming at him laterally, and moving on the GL extended would not have gotten him out of harms way.

I noticed it on the ballplayers who wear the double chin straps. True, one of their chin straps would be snapped, but the second one would not. Mostly noticed it on the wide outs and maybe once or twice on the QB. Can't remember which team(s) it was though.

Commenting on several things here. 5 man crew is what we use here so adding more would go against what we all train for. I'm still trying to figure out the "false start" signal given against the defense for jumping offside. The other signals need some work too. Not clean and crisp to my liking, but who am I :) I'm sure it's just the jitters from knowing the camera is focused on him. What rules are you using that prescribe a warning? I communicate with them in the huddle and if I see it when they are on the line I will tell them "88 put your mouthpiece in" as preventive officiating but if it isn't in I will not allow the snap to occur. Whistle, flag, signal 23, and signal timeout for that team. But, there is nothing that says they get a warning.

mcrowder Fri Oct 15, 2004 08:37am

Well... what you just did there is a warning if you're not flagging them for a mouthpiece out at the RFP...

But here's the rule:

1-4-4-b: Face masks and helmets with a secured four- or six-point chin strap. If a chin strap is not secured, it is a violation. Officials should inform players when all snaps are not secured without charging a timeout unless the player ignores the warning. Players of a team shall wear helmets of the same color and design, and facemasks of the same color.

The RFP part is 1-4-6-b: Officials should ascertain before the ready for play signal if players are not wearing mandatory equipment.....

I thought you were insenuating (sp) that we allow them to play like that and then give them a warning. Now after re-reading your post I realize I jumped the gun too quick. It's early and the caffeine hasn't kicked in yet!

mcrowder Fri Oct 15, 2004 09:15am

No problem... catching up on the caffeine myself. 3 games Wedn and a long one last night. 5 Peewees tomorrow. ugh.

Did anyone notice during this game the defensive end for one of the teams clearly crossed the line of scrimmage before the snap, went back on his side of the ball and got back in his stance and nothing was called? Or was I dreamin?

I seen it, but no foul was committed. Under NCAA as long as he doesn't make contact he can get back before the ball is snapped.

mcrowder Fri Oct 15, 2004 10:02am

(and as long as he doesn't draw movement from the offensive player directly across from him or adjacent to the player directly across from him)

Hand Signals Fri Oct 15, 2004 10:19am

Why are they using NCAA and not NF rules?

SouthGARef Fri Oct 15, 2004 10:42am

Texas and another state (Mississippi?) call under NCAA rules.

NF rules aren't designed for the level of football that Texas High School plays. :))

Texoma_LJ Fri Oct 15, 2004 11:29am

Jason, I hope you have a sense of humor.
But Oklahoma plays NF rules and our level of play is fine... ask Mack Brown !!!

Boomer Sooner !!

And ask Stoops where he gets a lot of his player from. Need I say more. We get the boys prepared for College here in Texas High School and then we ship them North to Stoops and they don't have to make any adjustments to the college game as they are already accustomed to those rules.
