I worked as line judge in a game the other night where the home team never huddled. The receiver on my side was rarely (if ever) momentarily within 15 yards of the ball after the ready for play.

Never did the offense gain an advantage by trying to "hide" near the sideline. The defensive back always came out to cover the receiver. I never call this unless there is an advantage gained.

For what it's worth, I rarely if ever see this called. Should I be flagging this?

How close did he get?

Certainly would make illegal substitutions pretty obvious.

I think you had a good "no call". That said, I would discuss with one of the experienced guys on my crew during post-game. A veteran's flag will often be accepted more readily in this type of situation than a rookie's flag. This makes life easier.

Sometimes the ball was on the other hash and he would be between the near hash and the sideline -- so about 25 yards.

REPLY: I agree with the "no-call." As long as he draws coverage, there is no advantage gained.

Yes sir, I would have a no call here also, I may even let him know that he has to get within 15 yards of the ball.

Good no call.

Mention this to the HC, because next week he may not be so lucky.
