Did Johnny Grier go down in Buffalo?
I just saw the Back Judge administer a roughing the passer foul. Edit: Just heard - Johnny Grier has a foot injury. Scott Green is the acting white hat. Cool. I know he'll kick a$$. Edit 2: Just like I said: kick a$$. They remembered to apply the illegal motion foul. Edit 3: I just realized after re-reading this post how funny it sounds to read that it's good that they remembered to apply the illegal motion foul. There was a toss to the EZ for a TD. On the play, a flag for IM was thrown. The defense challenged the play and it was upheld. They then remember to apply the IM foul, giving 2D/15. Kudos. Yeah, he is,
Foot injury or something, I just tuned in, and saw the BJ looking in the replay booth. |
How do they decide who gets to replace the referee if he becomes unable to perform his duties??

Green just put on the White Hat.

Hey Mike,
Have you seen the new play-by-play system put out by the CFL?? http://www.cflcentral.com/cfl_live/home |

The Yates Cup will be huge. I hope to be on the stick crew, since it will be in Waterloo!! ;) |

That's wierd, the link is the same one that I got in my e-mail, and it was working great yesterday and the day before.
Try it while a game is going on, it's really cool. |
Where's the bowl game being held this year?? And what name have they given it.
I remember 2 years ago it was the churchill bowl, then the mitchell bowl, what's next?? :D |

I think it's now the Mitchell Bowl and Uteck Bowls that are the national semi-finals. The west plays for the Dunsmore Cup and the east the Hardy trophy. |
I was on the CIS football site and checked the scheduels.
Ontario and Quebec are playing for the Uteck Bowl, and the Atlantic Conference and Canada West are playing for the Mitchell Bowl. Last year didn't Ontario and Quebec play for the Mitchell Bowl?? They've been making too many changes, do you know where they're gonna be playing the high school bowl games this year?? |

I read somewhere that there is a revolving bowl schedule, the details of which I am not yet 100% familiar with. I think it has something to do with where the game is played. Ie... geographically, the game that is easterly most is the Mitchell Bowl. (Or vice versa.) Also, I've got more educational dox for our website. - How to use the bean bag in Canadian amateur football - The Lines of Significance I promised - The A B C's of penalty application Check out the CIS 2003 Media Guide on our website... there is some good info in there. |
w00t!! Finally some instruction on how to use a bean-bag,
thanks Mike. I just remembered I have an OUA media guide somewhere in my room. I'm gonna check that out and see if it has any clarification in it. And is there a Canadian ref who hasn't seen that picture :D [Edited by ref18 on Oct 3rd, 2004 at 08:58 PM] |

I'm make sure to check that out. I'm sorta winging my use of the beanbag off what I'm seeing in the CFL and NFL games I watch, and think it'll be great to finally get some clarification on how the bean bag is used in Canadian football. Just a question for you, do many people in your association use a bean bag?? Because I've been noticing a few people starting to use them this year.

So you're the one that started this trend ;)

I recall the first time I used. Grand River High School is Kitchener. I'm deep convering a punt. I bag the PP - about a half yard into the EZ. Rec'v gets to the 8 or 9 and we bring the LS to the 20. Coach yells and screams that possession was the 1. I said (paragraphing myself...), "Coach, I have a bean bag at the point of possession, it's in teh EZ." He shut up pretty quick. From then on I was hooked. |

The first time I saw someone use a bean bag was when I did a game with McColman. It looked cool and I thought about getting one, it's just not everyday that I end up at an official's supply store. It took me a while to get it ;).
The only downside to using the bean bag to mark POP on a punt is that if the recovery is long, you don't have ball boys like the CFL does to get your bean-bag and you end up running 70+ yards down the field for it. |

Heck, if it's good enough for the pros, it's good enough for me. After all, the same sitch's happen with the 10-year olds as does the future Hall of Famers in the CFL. |

Unless, of course you need a 6th for a state final... I think I might be in town. ;) |
This might seem like a stupid question, but do you use the blue or white bags??

When I bought a starter package in the states, I was offered a bean bag as part of it, I chose blue. I've only lost it once, and that was on a night game on one of those 60 yards punt returns, but I was able to find it in the next quarter.
Next time I go to Honigs, I'm gonna pick up 2 more, because the Honigs ones are much nicer than the one I have. I'm going to stay away from the white bag, because I don't want to be looking for a bean bag in the snow. ;) |

The white ones I have are made of vinyl... I think they'll last longer than the blue cloth ones. |
I agree, the vinyl will last much longer than cloth.
Speaking of lifespan of equipment, what's your average lifespan for a penalty flag?? And how do you like these new sand filled flags over the old flags with a washer in them. I know that I've had to use a few elastics to turn my sand filled flag into a ball type torpedo flag so I can get throw it high, and aim it at a spot. |

I was doing a minor game 2 weeks ago (ages 14,15) and was the BU on a 5-person crew. RB breaks for a 12 yard gain and gets FM'd. My flag comes out, as did the HL's. The LJ was telling us in the post-game that he was laughing his butt off becuase we both threw our flag at the same time, with the same height, and both landed at PBH (UR optionally applied from), about a yard apart. He described both having the same trajectory. But then again, I actually have made it out to Laurier's stadium and practised flag throwing. |
That's cool, I thought I was the only one that practiced flag throwing, but I just toss it around the backyard, I've never thought of going to a stadium to try it, that sounds like it'd be more effective.
I too carry my torpedo flag NFL style, and after listing to the advice of many on this forum have started to carry my old washer flag as a spare in the back pocket, (you know for one of those plays where you make a really good call, but the coach doesn't seem to like it and it results in an OC on him;) that hasn't happened yet, but I'm always prepared for it :D) I'm sure there are other reasons to have a spare flag, (dual and double foul situations), a play with a penalty that ends with an offside pass, etc. You guys put 5 guys on the field in minor? i wonder what lakeshore thinks about that, they always seem to make a comment when we mention that we use 4 man crews for all tackle games ;) Your association must have quite a good amount of members to allow for that. I know that for all highschool games, we have 4 officials and a timer (usally a retired official, sometimes I have a few timing games on the scheduel) In the playoffs we provide the stick crew. For minor, we have 4 guys on field, a downbox with 2 parent volunteers on the yardsticks and a timer. [Edited by ref18 on Oct 3rd, 2004 at 11:43 PM] |
OK we have a racket, 5 Officials for High school Varsity, 3 chain crew and clock operator. For the playoffs (which start Sat) six officials, clock, chain crew, and 2 ball people.
