This play came up last night in meeting: unbalnce line TE cover up on there 35, QB takes snap drops back 1yrd. throws backward pass to TE,TE gaines 20 yrs. WH drops flag for Illegal procedure at snap. 3rd period same play unbalnce line TE cover, QB takes snaps and fakes to FB and hands off to TE going around end. WH flags then for illegal procedure any coments ?

I actually don't see any problem with either play, unless perhaps the pass was forward, which you said it wasn't. The handoff could be similar in nature to the center-sneak, fumble-rusky genre of plays. I could be wrong too

Any player on team-A can catch a backward pass. There is no foul on the first play.
The second play could be a foul if the conditions for handing a ball to a lineman are not met. See 7-3-2-a |
Essentially, a covered-up tight end is simply an additional tackle. Treat him like a lineman with regard to all rules.

Legal play on the backward pass. Any A (or B) player may receive a backward pass. The hand off is legal if backward also, if it is forward then the lineman requirements must be met.

why is the WH throwing the flag anyway? that is not his call. tell him to keep it in his pants.
