As a basketball official, I found humor in this. My 6th grader had his first football scrimmage on Saturday. A couple of our refs are guys I've worked several basketball games with so when asked it was easy for me to say yes to being on the chain gang.

First pass play, ball hits our player on the hands and defender puts a saddle on his back and goes for a ride. Parent: "come on ref, he's over the back". My buddy looks at me and we both stumbled to keep from falling down from laughing.

What's next?

"Three seconds in the pocket!"

or

"Why do they get the ball? They touched it last before it went out of bounds! C'mon ref... at least in basketball you get that one right."

Whenever you have simultaneous catch, look around for the possession arrow instead of giving the ball to the offense.

And instead of giving the delay of game signal, give the shot clock violation signal.

If on a successful FGA, the kicker is contacted, also give an option to chip shot it from the 5 (the new football charity stripe) for an extra point, "the old fashioned way".

If there's a penalty on the offense during an extra point, the kick is worth 3 points because it is from the 8 !

And don't forget that the touchdown signal in football will have a confused basketball scorekeeper only put three points on the board for the scoring team.
