I am sitting here and watching one of the Fox Sports Channels and there is a HS game on. It is a game from Pennsylvania. They showed the remaining schedule and there were 10 games left. They even talked about there were games the week before.

Now in my state our regular season is only 9 weeks long. Teams cannot play anymore than that.

How many games can schools play during the season?

There are many leagues playing football in Ontario.

The first league, the OVFL starts in late May and hold it's final in mid-August. A 9-week season with a bye week for each team. Quarters, semis as well. Two divisions: Jr and Sr, which are under 17, and 19 and under, respectively.

The NFC starts a week later and ends on the same weekend. This league has no age restrictions.

COMFL has a summer season as well. Same age as Sr OV.

The two-week hiatus between the OVFL/NFC seasons ending and fall football starting is very much welcomed.

Once September hits, minor football starts (ages 6-15), high school starts, and University ball starts. Provincial finals for high school and university go til late November.

So, basically, late May to late November, which is 6 months.

Myself, I'll probably officiate about 65 games in that time frame, about a game every 3 days.

In Oklahoma 10 weeks plus 2 weeks of scrimmages and then playoffs.

In Georgia, Ours is 10 games in 11 weeks each team usually has an off week built in. We also have two weeks of Jamborees. The first real games started on Aug. 20

In Utah, the regular season is 9 games, plus the schools can choose to schedule an Endowment game at the beginning of the season (which the majority play). So it is a total of 10 games for most teams plus the playoffs.

In my part of NY (those that take part in the playoff system as not all sections do), teams have a 9 game schedule which this year started on 9/3 and runs to 10/30.

Starting on 11/5, teams in the each of the five size classifications continue on in games referred to as sectional/regional/semis and then finals.

North Carolina

Season begins on 8/27, then each school has 11 weeks to play a 10 game schedule. The 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the season, each team participate in a total of 7 hours of scrimmages with other schools or half that many scrimmage hours plus an endowment game, which is in reality an 11th game, except that the NCHSSA gets half the gate. Schools do not have to schedule their endowment game on 8/20, but may schedule it during the season if they have an open date.

Playoffs begin on 11/12 and last 5 weeks.

Kansas
 

First game of 9 on Sept 3. Last game on Oct 28 or 29. Playoffs starting Nov 2 and championship games Nov 20 and Nov 27.

Indiana
 

Scrimmage games were the weekend of August 13 and 14
First regulars season games: August 20
Nine regular season weeks
Sectionals begin last weekend in October
State finals games the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Nebraska:

Week 0 was August 27th. That's due to some odd numbers in districts, so those teams that played that night get a bye during the season.

Week 1 was Sept. 2/3. Week 8 (for Classes C-1 through D-2) will be Oct. 21/22, while Week 9 (for Classes A and B) will be Oct. 28/29. Playoffs for C-1 through D-2 start on Oct. 27th (I think), while A and B start the following week. Reason is that C-1 through D-2 have 32 qualifiers for playoffs, while A and B only have 16.

Playoffs conclude weekend before Thanksgiving (Nov. 19/20) with the state finals at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln (the Huskers have a bye week so the high school finals are that weekend).

Iowa:

Week 1 was Sept. 2-4, while there were a few teams that played the previous weekend. Again, some odd numbers in some classes caused this I believe. Last week of regular season is Oct. 28/29. Playoffs start the following week, with championships in Cedar Falls at the UNI Dome the same weekend as Nebraska's finals.

Basically 11 weeks for 10 games, then 5 rounds of playoffs (D1). A team that makes it to the BlueCross Bowl would play 15 games.

Let's change a couple of things here.

The first games were played on 8/20. Those games were indeed, Endowment games. The NCHSAA Endowment Fund gets 25% of the game, not 50%.

If a school plays an Endowment game, they can play 11 games in 12 weeks. So in reality, the season started 8/20 and will end 12/11, which is entirely too long. No one in the country plays longer than we do.
