If you kick the ball from the 35 yard line. Is this considered a 35 yard kick or a 45 yard kick. Is the answer the same for all leagues (High school, college, nfl)?

The end zone is 10 yards in length.
 

Yes. The actual spot of the attempt (not the LOS) is the spot of the kick for statistical purposes.

If the spot of the kick is the 35 yard line, sounds to me like you are saying this would be called a '45 yard attempt'.

So the 63 yard nfl record was kicked from the kicking teams 47 yard line. 53 yards plus 10 yards for the end zone.

Usually a team sets up 7 yards behind the LOS. So typically you can add 17 yards to the LOS and you have the yardage. But I know the FG kicker from NO (Tom Dempsey??) kicked his 63 yarder when the goal posts were on the goal line. Elam (sp?) from Denver kicked his just a few years ago, but I am not sure if he set up 7 yards behind the LOS. I am sure someone knows the facts of this. I thought Elam kicked the ball 8 yards from behind the LOS. I remember some talk about that, but I do not remember.

Well I'm not sure of the answer, but I am going to take an educated guess and say HS. Free kick. :)

Longest FG is by a HS player from Nevada. Dirk Borgenone hit a 68 yd FG in the late 80's. He went on to Tennessee and was a bust. It was not a free kick either.

It was indeed a high school kicker, Dirk Borgognone (Reno, NV) vs. Sparks, NV, 9-27, 1985.

By the way, two HS kickers have kicked 67 yard field goals.

The NCAA record is 67 yards and is held by 4 kickers.

The NFL record is 63 yards and is held by 2 kickers.

REPLY: I would assume that the NCAA's 4-yard edge over the NFL can be attributed to the use of a tee in NCAA where the NFL requires the ball to be kicked off the turf.

Depends on the year that the kicks occurred. In the NCAA the tee is not allowed for FGs. I'll research and see when these kicks occurred and when the tee was banned.

The ban on kicking tees for XPs and FGs went into effect in the 1989 season. The last record kick was in 1988. You nailed it right.

Also there is no dis-incentive for HS kickers not to try a 90 yard FG since the rules treat a MFG the same as a punt.

Sorry to ask again. But what I understand from the conversation is that the kicker gets credited with the 10 yards of the end zone. The kick is recorded based on the actual distance it travels. Correct?
Tom Dempsey kicked the ball from his own 37 yard line and got the record of a 63 yard kick. Jason Elam kicked the ball from his own 47 yard line and tied the record.

Yup. That would be correct. Dempsey kicked when the goalposts were on the goalline. Elam kicked after the goalposts were moved back to the endline.

Actually Dempsey kicked the ball 62 1/2 yards. There is film of this kick and it shows the ball set at the other 37 1/2 yard line. They rounded up for statistical purposes back then. Elam kicked the ball from the other 47 yard line. Elam's kick was actually a longer kick but both are listed as the same length by the NFL. The longest college field goal without a tee is 65 yards.
