Starting the clock

Here is a question on starting and stopping the clock.

NFHS

The clock is stopped before this play starts for an incomlete pass.

On the next play the clock is started with the snap and there is a foul on the offense during the down and the only reason you stopped the clock was because of the penalty.

Now, do you start the clock with ready or do you start it with the snap since the play was negated by the foul.

Clock status is important.

What was the status of the clock when the penalty occurred?

If the clock was running at the end of the play the clock would start on the ready. If the clock was stopped (incomplete pass, out of bounds run), then you start the clock on the snap.

Now that is very basic rule application. It would help if you were also more specific about what kind of penalty or when the penalty occurred. That can affect exactly what will happen next.

Peace

The clock is started or stopped based upon what action happened during the play with the foul. The previous play has nothing to do with live-ball fouls.

Example:

Play 1. 1/10 at A-20. A1 throws an incomplete forward pass (no fouls during the play).

Play 2. 2/10 at A-20. A1 hands off to A2 who runs for 3 yards to the A-23 where he is tackled inbounds. During the run, B1 is flagged for a 5-yard facemask foul.

In this case, we start the clock on the ready-for-play because the ONLY thing to stop the clock was the penalty.
