Until 2004, Georgia used a "penetration rule" to decide OT situations. Now we will be using the 15 yard line rule similiar to the NCAA rule. By the way I hated the peneration rule because it required you to keep up with the offense's deepest penetration into the defense's territory and penetration was wiped out if the offense scored. All in all it was a big mess. What are you guys using in other states?

IL=10 yard OT procedure. My third year. Never had one yet!

NY uses 20 yard OT procedure. Everything same as 10 yard, except we start at the 20.

### NCAA starts at the 25 yard line, is that what you meant?

NY starts at the 20 1&10.

That why I said it is similar? We will start on the 15 yd line instead of the 25yd line. All other rules are basically the same as NCAA.

NC uses NF 10 yard OT proceedure

Ref Ump Welsch Fri Aug 06, 2004 11:12am

NE and IA both use the 10-yard procedures outlined in NF rules. Nebraska started using the rule in late '70s, after having a heck of a time determining district champions who had ties on their records.

### Well good luck. You just finished playing 48 minutes using NF rules, then switch to OT and use rules basically the same as NCAA. Phew that will be fun. Good thing GA has now ruled to disallow protests. If there is ever a time to get the rules messed up it will be here in OT.

SoGARef Fri Aug 06, 2004 03:10pm

Actually, GA began using the new OT procedure last year. I had to use it one time last year. It is far more simpler to administer that the old penetration OT that was in place since the Fordham (old Exec. Sec.) days. I call it the modified NCAA OT as everything is the same except for the beginning point is the 15-yard line instead of the 25-yard line. I also happened to be working the Auburn/Georgia game that went for 5 rotations and caused the rule to be changed to having to go for 2 points after the second rotation.

Theisey Fri Aug 06, 2004 03:24pm

I don't want to dwell on this too much longer as it not something that really applies to NF football in my area, but during the overtime (we're talking just for Georgia now) if team-B gains possession say on a failed TRY or a missed FG attempt caught in the EZ, they can advance for a possible score?

SoGARef Fri Aug 06, 2004 04:06pm

No, if team B gains possession of the ball the play is blown dead immediately and B starts a new series at the 15-yard line. In a nut shell, B can never score in the OT.

Theisey Fri Aug 06, 2004 07:22pm

OK, thanks SoGARef.
That was the part of Goldcoastump's statement I had hard time believing. Team B can score under NCAA rules and I couldn't believe it when he indicated you would start at 15 yard line and use all the other NCAA extra period rules.
It would be a terrible burden on the officials had that be the case.

Northern California uses the 10yard overtime procedure of the NFHS.

ND = 10 yd NFHS

PA -REFEREE Sat Aug 07, 2004 01:18pm

Washington State uses the 25 yd. line to start OT.If the game is still tied after two OT's then we move the teams to the ten. Believe it or not, in 23 years of HS ball, I have never had an overtime game. Twice in semi-pro, but none in HS.

NFHS

LA - 10 yard line

We also have to have a try after any score during a live ball play; no matter what the score is.

LHSAA uses this for the power point system to determine playoff brackets.

REPLY: NJ uses the NCAA OT procedure (1-10 from B's 25; B can score on turnover).

Theisey Mon Aug 09, 2004 06:39pm

Bob, can Team-B score on a blocked kick TRY, or short TRY/FG attempt caught in the EZ?

REPLY: As tpaul said, no Tom, they can't. The regular Fed "playing" rules prevail in OT. It's just that we use the NCAA procedure in extra periods.

FBullock Tue Aug 10, 2004 08:40am

Ohio starts the OT @ the 20, everything else same as in NF book.

Canadian Overtime

Coin toss at centre ice, visitor's choice.

Winner can choose to start on offense, defense, or choose which end of the field to play at. Other team chooses remaining option.

Start with 1D/10 at the 35 and play regular football. Each team gets a series from the same 35. If you score more points than the other team, you win. The defense scoring ends the game. No timeouts.
