Perhaps Pman was part of the SB XXXVIII halftime show. He may have been the asswipe that held up the 2nd half kickoff by running around in an officials hat, officials sox, and a G-String.

Its funny, they show Janet Jackson's boob, but they won't show a guy dressed as an official running around the field in a G-String.

I thought the officials made a couple of
"questionable" calls in the first quarter--
particularly the "spot" on the 4th and short
for New England.
My questions is this-- we as officials know
that we need to have a good pre-game to
get ourselves in mental shape to work the game--
I think the pre-game "crap", including the over-drawn
coin flip causes officials to lose that "edge" needed
to work a good game. It was remarked that the
players may have lost their "edge" and that could have
contributed to the sluggish first quarter of play.
I was reminded of a high school game
that I worked years ago where they had a very long and
drawn out introduction of senior players, cheerleaders,
and parents before the kickoff. I personally began to
get bored and it took me a while to get my mind
back into officiating.

I had three games this year with long and drawn out pre-game activities - introducing teams from 25 years ago, Hall of Fame inductees for a particular school, homecoming crap, etc etc.. and you're right, it is easy to drift a little waiting. You have a set inner clock for how long everything should take once you walk on the field and when that's thrown off, your performance may suffer early.

What I've done this last year to fight that, as I noticed that I sleep walked throught the first 2 or 3 plays of the game, was picture in my mind the opening kickoff from where I would be positioned, then the first offensive play, then the first scrimmage kick, and then the first try. I would do this in my head over and over so by the time it came time to flip the coin and get on with the show, I was into the game already.

As an aside, do you R's introduce the rest of your crew to the captains before the toss or do you just introduce yourselves and move on?

REPLY: My crew does here in NJ, but it's not an official technique that's mandated. So other crews may not. We also make a point of having the HL and LJ introduce themselves by name to the head coach on their sideline.

Here in Peninsula Virginia (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg areas), since the crew does not go out to the middle of the field, R introduces the whole crew only to the head coaches during the coaches pre-games. The crew's names are announced by the PA.

back in CNY- the white hat would
introduce all officials who lined up on
the 45----
here in SW FL-- there is no introduction
of the other officlas other than any
hellos with coaches pre-grame---
names of officials are read by
the PA before games in both locations.
