Cowboys/Patriots Game on ESPN, the late sunday game.

Anyone see the call made in the last couple minutes?

I might lose some people here but let me try and explain.

They called a personal foul for unnecessary roughness because the patriot player 'shot' himself into the cowboy player semi-leading with his head. For the people who saw it(if any), what would your call have been?

I will try and find a better description of it or maybe a video clip tomorrow.

Sounds similiar to the play I had Friday night.

Punt return, K1 goes flying at R1, leading with his forearm which nailed R1 directly in the head.

I flagged it, coach didn't like it, wouldn't be quiet, and got one himself.

I'd flag it again if I saw it again.

I thought it was a pretty good call, the announcer wasn't pleased with the call at all. I have to be honest though, when I saw the flag go I had no clue what it was for. You get a lot better view on the field than on the TV. lol ;)

Looked like a righteous call to me. Kudos to the guy who threw the flag for having the gonads to do it. Too many times in the NFL they let them get away with that crap (unless it is on a QB of course)

First let me state my allegiance: Diehard Cowboy fan.

However, I'm shocked they called it, and surprised that it was illegal. Looked to me like he was trying to deliver a blow to keep the receiver from catching the ball. Can't believe you're not allowed to do that.

If they'd called leading with the helmet, I would have thought two things A) they missed the call - he led with his shoulder, and B) at least that rule makes sense.

From the deep official's angle, the defender did appear to lead with his helmet. But from the opposite angle caught by one of the TV cameras, the defender appeared to lead with his shoulder. The crew conferenced, but obviously no other official had the look that the TV camera showed.
So based upon what the deep offical saw, good call.

The first time they showed it from the one officials perspective and it definitely looked like a helmet to helmet. After they changed views(to the opposite side) it looked more like he was leading with his shoulder. I think the call could have gone either way.

Last night on NFL Total Access on the NFL Channel, Mike Pereirra reviewed this and other calls made on Sunday. He stated that this is a foul since the defender led with his head down even though he hit first with his shoulder. It was a safety issue for both players.

By the way, this is a great feature they are now doing every Monday nite for those of us who love to review these plays to death. Unfortunately, I think its only available on Directv.

I have directTV, but I think you have to pay for the NFL channel, right?

STEVED21 Tue Nov 18, 2003 11:26am

I think its part of the sportspak package.

We have the NFL channel on DirectTV here... it's part of the "Total Choice Package" (which is the basic selection, isn't it?), channel 212 for us.

I did not see the play but was the receiver considered to be "exposed"?? NFL has that personal foul rule for "drilling" a receiver that is "exposed" and not able to defend himself.
