B rallies with four TDs in the fourth quarter to tie A. After the end of the 4th quarter, five A players go up to five B players and punch them in the stomachs. B does nothing to retaliate. A gets the ball first in OT, but before they can get a play off, they commit two false starts in a row.
Where is the ball? What is the down? What is the distance? Whose ball is it? |
OK I'll take a stab at it:
There are two ways you could penalize team A: (10 yard line overtime procedure)
1. Penalize A one time (15 yards for all 5 players) thus A's ball 1/G from the 35 (including the 2 FS). Of course eject all 5 A players. 2. Penalize A for each player 15 yards (and ejection) thus A's ball 1/G from the 5 (including the 2 FS)at other end of field. Personally, I would assess as in option 2. I'm assuming we are using the rules the Kansas plan for OT (starting play from the 25 yard line). If this is the case, I believe it is A's ball - 1st and goal from A's 1.625 yard line. A is also short 5 of their players. Here's how I come to that:
5 - UC 15 yard penalties - the last one will be a 1/2 the distance putting the ball at the 7.5. 2 - 5 yard penalties for the FS - both will be 1/2 the distance - 1st one takes it to the 3.5 and the next to the 1.625. [Edited by Patton on Oct 30th, 2003 at 12:41 PM] |
A's ball on the 1.625. Same logic as above (start on the 25, then UC to the 40, UC to the other 45, UC to the 30, UC to the 15, and UC to the 7.5. False start to the 3.25, False start to the 1.625. 1st and goal, 98.375 yards to go.
Assuming this had to be the University of Miami, so I'm also assuming they score. |
Thanks for the replies. It is very informative because in PA for high school and below we start at the 10. For NCAA we use the 25. Different starting points have varying effects.

Sean, in PA we use the ten yard line for varsity only. There is no OT for any game under PIAA control except the varsity. 7th, 8th, 9th and JV all will end in a tie at the end of regulation.
