Taking the position of an interior lineman is not the same as being in the game under the numbering exception. The rule is that there be 5 players on the line numbered between 50 and 79. There is no rule about the numbers of the other 6 who may or may not be on the line. By having the 5 numbered between 50 and 79, you have complied with the rule. There is no need for any exception.

Number Exception means you are allowed to have less than five players numbered 50-79. That can only happen if in scrimmage kick formation.

So if 80 doesn't take the place of 50 through 79 then he didn't use the exception. He may shift to an eligible position and become an eligible receiver.

Didn't 80 take the place of an int. lineman???? He did line up as a tackle, in his place. Or am I reading too muchj into the ecxeption. In my mind, 80 has taken the position of a lineman #50-79, meaning the exception IS in effect. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The exception allows K to have fewer than 5 players numbered 50-79. If there are at least 5 players with those numbers on the LOS then I don't care where they lined up initially. I do care if they go set. With those 5 players out there then this play is just like an other scrimmage plays and all shifts can make players eligible or ineligible.
