Question for college officials.
 

I am not nor I have ever officiated football (unless you count H.S. soccer, :p).

My question concerns hats. Both Mark, Jr., and I umpire H.S. baseball and softball and Junior also umpires college softball. One can get away with wearing an adjustable hat for H.S. baseball and softball (but you would never catch Junior and me wearing an adjustable hat, we only wear fitted hats) and one can only wear fitted hats for college softball.

My wife's alma mater is the Univ. of Toledo so we see quite a few MAC games every year and the MAC has a couple of female officials, which I think is great, but I have noticed that the female officials wear adjustable hats which are no doubt easier to wear with long hair.

What does the CCA Football Manual say about hats?

Technically hats are supposed to be fitted. But I doubt anybody cares if it’s for hair.

Easier to poke a ponytail through if they wish I imagine.

Sarah Thomas, NFL, wears a sized cap and tucks it up in it.

I have worked with a female official on a junior college game. She wears fitted hats, althugh she has a somewhat shorter hairstyle. The other female official I know who works college football wears fitted hats and has her hair tied below the hat when working.

I have never seen a woman not wear a fitted hat. We have a D1 official in the area that works some high school and lower-level college and she wears a fitted hat at least when I worked with her in some scrimmages and a real game once.
