Midlands will work just fine... as long as you have a set that can all a) communicate with each other, b) have adequate range (300 yards line-of-sight, which basically any radio can do) and c) can fit an earpiece, you're fine.

If other crews in your area use a specific brand or style, it would probably be a good idea to get the same set so officials can move from crew to crew without compatibility concerns.
