Defensive Pass Interference Penalty Question.
Non-football official here.
How are the penalties different for NFHS, NCAA, and NFL? Thanks. MTD, Sr. |
At the NFHS level, the penalty for Defensive PI is repeat the down, 15 yards in advance of the previous spot (LOS) not a spot foul, and is no longer an automatic 1st down.

NCAA:
Spot foul if foul takes place less than 15 yards from previous spot. 15-yard penalty if foul takes place more than 15 yards from the previous spot. If ball is snapped from inside the 17 yard line and foul occurs inside the 2 yard line, ball is placed that the 2 yard line. If ball is snapped from at/inside the 2 yard line, half-the-distance. Automatic first down in all of the above. If foul occurs on a try from the 3 yard line, half-the-distance. If foul occurs on a try from anywhere but the three yard line, refer to the previous paragraph. NFL is a spot foul, unless foul occurs in the end zone, in which case the ball is placed at the 1 yard line. Not sure what they do on trys. |
