NFL live+dead ball foul enforcement

Just curious if anybody has any insight as to why the NFL would have a live ball foul by the defense and a dead ball foul by the offense (or vice versa) offset. Seems very counter-intuitive.

Has always ben that way -- if the dead ball foul happens right after the play ends, they offset.

Frankly, I wish we had that enforcement. Much cleaner.

Full disclosure: I haven't read the NFL rulebook.

Cleaner, maybe, but it depends on how you define "right after the play ends"... I think we'd all agree that a late-hit type PF would be "right after the play ends", but what about a taunting foul 3 seconds after?

They call it "continuing action".
