K1 placesthe ball on the tee for a free kick. After the ready-for-play whistle, K1 throws a backward pass to K2 who places it on the ground, not using a tee, and (A) kicks an on side kick. Or, after K2 places the ball on the ground, he (B) tosses the ball back to K1 who proceeds to kick the ball from the original spot off of the tee.

In A is this a free kick infraction - 5 yards or is it an illegal kick - 15 yards?

In B this must be a legal kick since it was kicked from the designated spot.

It's a free kick infraction (5 yds.) NF 6-1-2: <i>"A free kick shall be made from any point between the inbounds lines and on K's free kick line. A punt may not be used for a free kick other than after a safety. <b>Once designated, K must kick from that spot."</b></i>

The penalty for A is five yards. Rule 6 art. 2. There are no rulings in any of the books for B.

REPLY: Situation B could never happen since a dead ball foul occurs as soon as K1 picks up the ball and tosses it to K2.
