Will Muschamp tantrum
Did anyone else see Will Muschamp's fit of rage during the Iron Bowl on Saturday?
Now, I am just a basketball referee so I am curious. Assistant coaches get away with very little in basketball, and from my perspective, I thought Muschamp was going to get ejected. As would be expected of an SEC crew, Tom Ritter calmly told Gus Malzahn that Muschamp had to be restrained. I know in football the standards are different, so I ask, how much are football assistants typically able to get away with? |

It is in the culture of football to allow more interaction without a penalty. I do not agree with that, but it is more accepted. But that also means that it is more accepted to say thing back to the coach as well and at a higher volume. One of the main reasons is you are farther away from the fans and the microphones, you can say things to each other and no one off the sideline can necessarily hear you.
Also most approaches to assistants are the same. Usually we do not talk to assistants at all and have to "put them in their place" quickly. Peace

Unless he makes intentional, forceful contact with an official, a coach cannot be ejected. The NCAA football rule is different.

Ritter wasn't all that calm. You could tell from his facial expression that the crew had taken all they were going to hear from Muschamp, and he plainly let Gus know that another outburst would result in an ejection.

Not an ejection. 15 yards though.

I've never seen an ejection for a tantrum. Heck, I've never seen a flag for one. Baby Stoops is legendary for his tantrums, and I've never seen him flagged. In his stint at AZ he come out past the numbers having a spittle flecked nutty and nothing happened.
I'm not surprised nothing happened here. |

May it please the court, I'd like to cite Officials v. Bo Pelini, Nebraska, 2009-14, et al. While there are few confirmed precedents, they do exist at the D1 Power 5 level.
