I hope one of the college officials on this board can answer my question. I watched the game last night and read this article (Va Tech running back wears gold watch during game), and I would like to know if this is legal? Thanks.

It is not legal. But then again it is very hard to see those things unless you are up close. I am sure the crew heard about it because it was all over the broadcast.

From what I've been reading, Rogers Redding approved it beforehand. Evidently it is plastic to look gold (no idea if that's true or not) and NCAA has no prohibition against jewelry in general.

NCAA doesn't have nearly as many uniform-police rules as FED. (although the doom-and-gloom in me says this is going to start the NCAA down the uniform-police rabbit hole).

If it's actually made of metal, there's no way I'd allow it in my game.

If it's plastic, it would really depend on how hard it is and if there are any potentially dangerous edges on it, but I'd be leaning towards not allowing it.

That's why us Umpires get paid the mediocre bucks.

I'd really hope that one of the officials spotted it during pregame warmups; with 7 (or 8) of us out there for a full hour before kickoff, SOMEBODY should've seen it.

ETA: I'm not trying to throw the officials under the bus here; it's entirely likely that they ruled it legal. All I'm doing is making conjecture on how I'd rule based on seeing a couple of blurry photographs.
