Inv Whistle?????

Can someone explain in the readers digest version of the dreaded Inv whistle and a teams options?????

If the ball is loose, there's no option: replay the down.
If someone is in possession, his team may keep the ball where it was when the whistle blew, or replay the down.

My umpire says he always throws a flag if he hears an IW... 😉

This is not true for NFHS. The team last in possession gets the option.
Replay the down or take the ball at the spot of the fumble.

If the IW occurs during a legal forward pass, legal kick or snap if flight, then there' no option: replay the down.

If the IW occurs during a fumble, backwards pass, illegal forward pass or illegal kick, the team last in possession has the option.

Both of these assume there's no accepted penalty.

During a punt, ball has hit on the 8 yard line but has not been touched, a whistle blows at the line of scrimmage. Is the only option you have is to replay the down? Also you have 2 players fighting that caused the whistle to blow and 2 personal fouls, Ruling! Replay the down and enforce the penalty's?

Jake, if a accepted penalty occurs during the down and an IW occurs to end the down, then basically the IW never occurred. Treat it like any other play.

What's your confusion with that situation? Do you think we should do something different?
