JR12 Joel Peralta caught with pine tar by Nationals, but it?s the Rays crying foul | Big League Stew - Yahoo! Sports
mbyron Tschida told Maddon he could check one opposing player in response (that's a weird rule), so the umps patted down Washington's Ryan Mattheus but found nothing untoward. What the hell is that? Tit for tat? Anyone find that in MLBUM?
Eastshire mbyron wroteWhat the hell is that? Tit for tat? Anyone find that in MLBUM? My guess is that's not an accurate report. Maddon probably accused Mattheus of something in retaliation, forcing the umpires' hands.

Tschida probably (as I would have) "allowed" one check of an opposing player to pacify Maddon and to prevent a continued parade to the mound. Solid game management.

kylejt "I like the word p***y move." Once again, you guys miss the best part of the whole story. Hil-freakin'-larious! p.s. what brand of mask was the PU wearing? (that'll make more than half of you guys watch that video again)
asdf RPatrino wroteYou are kidding, right? Nope.... This was a pissing match. Confirmed by both managers in post game interviews. I don't need something in black and white to tell me how to handle it.
RPatrino asdf wroteNope.... This was a pissing match. Confirmed by both managers in post game interviews. I don't need something in black and white to tell me how to handle it. You are welcome to handle these situations any way you feel comfortable. I know how I would have handled it, and it would not be trying to keep things "even" between the teams.
asdf RPatrino wroteYou are welcome to handle these situations any way you feel comfortable. I know how I would have handled it, and it would not be trying to keep things "even" between the teams. What was being kept "even"? Tim knew what was going on. He handled it fine.
RPatrino I am not criticizing Tim in the least. However, that is not how I would have handled the situation.
nopachunts RPatrino wroteHowever, that is not how I would have handled the situation. How would you have handled it differently?
RPatrino nopachunts wroteHow would you have handled it differently? "Tschida probably (as I would have) "allowed" one check of an opposing player to pacify Maddon and to prevent a continued parade to the mound." I would not have done this. Eject, move on.

Eject, move on. You may have done this at whatever level you work. You would not have if you were a MLB umpire. You would have done exactly what Tschida did, the prescribed manner in which this is handled.

Eject, move on. Ejection is not the correct way to handle this pi$$ing contest. You check the other team's glove once and that's it. If the coach wants every relief pitcher's glove checked, then, it ain't happening!
UES "p.s. what brand of mask was the PU wearing? (that'll make more than half of you guys watch that video again)" Dont even have to look at the video - I know Tschida wears a NIKE mask 😉 Yeah... I know - get a life 😀 lol

If the coach wants every relief pitcher's glove checked, then, it ain't happening! +1 As I said before.... Solid game management. He stopped the shenanigans and let both managers make fools of themselves off the field. If Tim dumps Maddon the game goes on, but the garbage continues to sour.

Eject, move on.Huh? You would have ejected him for asking to check the opposing player? Really? You would not have done WHAT, exactly. Allowed him to check? Or told him "we're checking one, I don't want a parade of checks from you though ... this is all." You would have allowed NO checks? or INFINITE checks?

I would have allowed any and all checks that were requested. I would not tell anyone that they get 'one' because the other guy got 'one'.
