Mark Padgett My wife's cousin (also a female) emailed this to her and she forwarded it to me. "A little known fact.... The first testicular guard "Cup" was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important."
26 Year Gap Not to burst the balloon, but helmets were in use earlier than that. A lot of these email pass-alongs are really not well researched.

AKOFL That is because some contact to the head wont kill you, but some contact to the groin and you wish you were dead.
Jay R The NHL made helmets mandatory in 1979 but about 70% of the players were already wearing them. Craig McTavish was the last NHL player to not wear a helmet (in 96 or 97?). The rule was grandfathered so McTavish was no obligated to wear one. I'm sure he did wear a cup though.
DLH17 I always remember 1979 from the NHL perspective for 2 main reasons: 1. the mandatory helmet rule 2. Wayne Gretzky's rookie season in the NHL - scored 51 goals and 137 pts
26 Year Gap The source was probably someone like the test marcher in Farmington ME. Hates men. Makes up stuff to justify the hate. [spoiler alert in Bangor Daily News]
BillyMac In Major League baseball, helmets were mandated in 1971, however, players who were grandfathered in could choose to not wear one if they wished. Who was the last Major League player to bat without wearing a batting helmet, in 1979.
Mark Padgett BillyMac wroteWho was the last Major League player to bat without wearing a batting helmet, in 1979. This guy?
AKOFL Thats funny a Mark. My girls were just playing dolls today and one of their dolls name is Sarah Palin.😃 they also sang some make up sarah palin song for about 15 minutes

bainsey BillyMac wrote Who was the last Major League player to bat without wearing a batting helmet, in 1979. That's required knowledge for Red Sox fans. Bob Montgomery, backup catcher, late '70s.
DLH17 bainsey wroteThat's required knowledge for Red Sox fans. Bob Montgomery, backup catcher, late '70s. I was sorta close....guessed a catcher. Wrong coast, tho.
Mark Padgett bainsey wroteThat's required knowledge for Red Sox fans. Bob Montgomery, backup catcher, late '70s. Found this picture of him. BTW - the first player to wear a batting helmet was Roy "The Little Pansy" Smith. His teammates gave him that nickname.

DLH17 I had completely forgotten about Bob Montgomery until you posted that baseball card pic. It's all coming back now....he's one of those guys that seemed to come in every single pack. ðŸ˜

If I already had quite a few of the top card, I went on to the next. They say it was random distribution of cards, but I always thought of one of the MAD Magazine articles which parodied Peanuts called "Misery is". One of the selections was "Misery is getting a new pack of baseball cards and getting 5 Marv Throneberrys."

I must've been the sucker that bought all those packs you peeked into. 🙂 Here's another one of those guys that seemed to come in every pack:
Mark Padgett Yeah, I used to get this guy in every pack. I must have had a couple of hundred of him. I've lost them all, but it's no big deal - right? After all - we just bought those packs for the high quality bubble gum.
