Although I have heard officials say "Full timeout called by white coach", instead of "Full timeout requested by white coach granted".

Failed... I said, when coaches are able to call time-out, I'm no longer going to referee....

I say, for example: Time-out White, Coach (or whoever requested it), 30-second (or 60) [with signal], Spin it (while pointing at the table to start timing).

Agree. We're not supposed to. I'm on our local training committee and we tell our cadets to keep their verbiage to a minimum when reporting to the table.

It's not, "I've got a foul on white thirty-two for a hold. Blue ball out of bounds on the side". Instead it should be, ""White. Thirty-two. Hold. Possession blue."

More to the point, I like the FIBA rules better for timeouts. It gets rid of all these problems.

My first ever training session in my association.....Practicing calling fouls.

Me, "I've got, blue, 5, hold........"

Trainer - 😮 "I've got? I've got? You've got nothing!" Lesson learned, day one!

I use - "30 second timeout. Blue, coach. Start the clock." Same difference. 🙄

We just looked this up in the Official's Manual about 2 weeks ago. The correct TO reporting procedure is:

give the appropriate signal for the type of TO (30 or 60 second)
verbally indicate team color
verbally and visually give the player number or head coach
verbally and visually direct the timer to begin the TO period

I used to do 2, 3, 1, 4 but have now been retrained and am following the manual.

I've actually been told by some evaluators to not even verbalize what the foul is. If you go with the "by the book" calls, a coach can start arguing "that's not a hold!", etc., etc.

If you go "by the book" it says to only verbalize color and number, then visually signal the type of foul.

I tend to verbalize some (can't get out of the habit of saying 'push' and sometimes 'block'), but others (like 'hold' and 'illegal use of the hands') I never say. I don't know why (other than I wouldn't ever say 'illegal use of hands' if I didn't have to).

Since I've done so many years of clock/book at D-I games, I've picked up a lot of those refs' reporting habits - my signals aren't always the ones in the book, and I'll just describe what happened. 😮

Of course, I haven't reffed a game on the court in many years, so it's a bit moot at this point.
