bob jenkins I think the most recent RefMag had an article on this. As I recall, one guy wore a pedometer for 7 gmaes (or so), and the average was 2+ miles. Still, it's over 75 minutes (about), so it's not much of a pace.

Adam JugglingReferee wroteIt's nice to see that 2 x 2½ = 3 x 1.6(repeat). 🙂 That is interesting, and I wouldn't have guessed that there'd be roughly five miles of running total regardless of whether there are two or three officials.

Mwanr1 ODJ wrote2-man, 2 1/2 miles. 3-man, 1 2/3 miles, for me when I used a pedometer. What level of ball and the type of games did you work while using the pedometer? Each game varies.
Mark Padgett I usually average about half a block. And that's just when I walk off the court at halftime. 😉
JRutledge I was told there was a study done on this recently. It estimated that a college Men's official ran about 4.2 miles each game (longer court). And it estimated that HS officials likely ran around 3.2 miles. Of course this conversation was in passing and I do not have the reference to the exact study. This was just talked about as to how much running we do and how level changes. I guess on average the Women's sides run less at each level. Peace
Coltdoggs I figured it was about 1.5 -2.0 for the MS/AAU tourneys I work. I think 2.0 would be on the high side...Whomever said there is not much pace is dead on....I did have a JV level summer game two weeks ago that played 16 minute halves and the final score was 98-95 and there was a stretch of what seemed like 5 minutes where it was back and forth scoring....up and down the floor with no whistles....I was feeling the PACE then! 😀
NYBLUE I bought a pedometer solely for the purpose of getting an answer to this question...... but it's never worked. 😠 I've estimated that we run, on average, between 2 and 2.5 miles.
grunewar While it also depends on age, level of play, size of gym, etc., what about when forced to work by yourself? Foul line to foul line vs staying ahead of fast breaks and inbounding the ball on the baseline and playing catch-up...... thoughts?

Hi, i'm new to the forum - i think i actually run less but work harder getting angles when i've been forced to work a game by myself - hope i never have to do it again!!!

Peace Women's implies adults, so I'll assume he's referring to college. I'd guess the officials cover more distance in the women's college game than in the men's, because 30 < 35.

Together, that makes sense. If figure I run between 1.5 and 4-5 miles a game depending on the game. I did the pedometer bit for a few games and got numbers from below 2 to above 4.
BillyMac How far does a player run? I seem to remember somebody figured out how far John Havelick ran in an NBA game, back in the late 1960's, I think it was five miles, but I can't find anything regarding this on the internet, except for this: http://elevateyourgameinc.org/swagger.html
