There are 12 officials selected to work the finals...and going off of last year, 3 alternates. If you're selected to work a game (which all 12 officials are guaranteed at least one game), you will not be an alternate in any other game.

AremRed Fri Jun 05, 2015 01:57am

Hopefully my boy John Goble will get on the floor this year!

Goble is very good. If he isn't doing the finals this week, it won't be long.

1. Do the 12 selected each work once during games 1-4?
2. If yes for #1, how are the officials for games 5-7 determined? Are the officials graded and the bottom three dropped?

Much harder to play Fantasy Referee Administrator with basketball refs than soccer. There isn't a rhyme I have noticed. I'm sure a couple guys get graded out but I'd wager they pretty much know the top 6 refs in the league and give those guys games 6 and 7 if it comes down to that. Expect some combination of Foster, Joey, Danny, Duke, Monty, and Mauer/Capers/Brothers/Washington (those four tied in my mind) for the later games.

I'd wager we don't see Brothers again this series, he was pretty poor tonight.

The foul that he missed when Lebron got whacked across the arms with around a minute remaining was truly egregious.
I think that alone would warrant any league with decent accountabilty standards to not assign him again during the current postseason.

He also missed Lebron's travel on the same play. Two obvious no-calls directly in front of him on one play? Ouch.

kstiles99 Mon Jun 08, 2015 09:55am

I'm pretty sure Joey will work game 3 or 4 with Mike Callahan and Ken Mauer. Alt. Ed Malloy.

The other crew would probably be Dan Crawford with Davis and Stafford.

I also agree, Brothers is probably done working this season.

Wasn't Brothers at Lead with the play right in front of him? Traveling isn't his call there, that's Trail.

So Joey C., Duke Callahan, and ... for Game 4?

Ken Mauer?

Nevadaref Tue Jun 09, 2015 02:35pm

Is there any basis in the NBA rules for Nunn's take on the jumpball needing to be retossed once it comes below the player's shoulders without being tapped?

Is this just his personal interpretation without anything in the rule book? I have never heard this thought in almost 20 years of officiating.

Pretty bad miss as with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter as Derrick Stafford clearly held up an open palm and was pointing at the Warriors sideline, then it was inbounded and four seconds was allowed to run when it never should of.

Yeah there were some flukes.. Especially when there was an inadvertent whistle and then went back to review and fix it. Nobody really knew what was going on.

Still not as bad as Game 2 (particularly Tony Brothers.)

Joey Crawford telling Mosgov to "Do me a favor and shut up" is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.

If only I could get away with telling coaches that at my level.

Multiple Sports Fri Jun 12, 2015 09:20am

Granted the game was a blow out, but I thought they did a nice job. Also, I'm curious what other posters will think but I think that crew on paper is much stronger than any of the other three crews ????

Hope it goes 7 as I would like to see them all work again together...

Raymond Fri Jun 12, 2015 03:26pm

Joey better not work Game 7, I'll be at his camp that day.

Multiple Sports Fri Jun 12, 2015 04:24pm

You've been there 3 times....haven't you learned everything by this time....I think the only thing you have common is the same barber !!!!

Lcubed48 Fri Jun 12, 2015 04:27pm

Somebody has to say this!

That comment to a player is unprofessional, disrespectful, classless.
This is the very reason that Joey constantly gets into trouble.
It's time that the NBA whacked him with a significant fine or suspension.

. . . and, still, deep down inside, most of us would LOOOVE to say that to a coach or PITA player just once . . .

This will be my 3rd time. And I will go every year that I'm still officiating high level basketball. All b.s. aside, it is hands down the best camp I've ever attended and I can't imagine not learning something significant and new every year.

Additionally it is 20 minutes from my dad's house, and held the Friday & Saturday of Father's Day weekend.

Hmmm. Worked more NBA Finals than anyone. Worked a critical Game 4 this NBA Finals. Will probably work later in the Finals if the series goes longer. Not sure what the NBA has a problem with if he keeps working.

What we do at our levels have nothing to do with what they do at the professional levels. Nothing we say here is going to change that fact.

Peace

The real drama will be who is officiating Game 6.

Scott Foster, Zach Zarba, and some combination of John Goble, Marc Davis, Derrick Stafford, or Tom Washington.

Really doubt Brothers will be back but I could be wrong.

I'd bet Joey, Danny, and Duke for game 7 then.

Why do you think Monty will work a 3rd game when there are 4 crew chiefs available to work their 2nd (Danny C./Joey C./Duke Callahan/Ken Mauer)?

I really doubt Joey will work again. He's nearing his last season(s) and I think he will want to keep his finals experience at a solid 50. Also there was definitely some problems between him and Mosgov and Lebron. Scott Foster is working tonight so he's out.. And I don't think anyone but Monty would suit that position. But as I type this.. I keep thinking to myself that Tom Washington and John Goble have only been alternates once.

I have two crew predictions for game 7 now:

Danny-Duke-Monty-Ken

Danny-Duke-Ken-Goble/Washington

Either way Danny, Duke, and Ken will be on game 7.

kstiles99 Tue Jun 16, 2015 10:11pm

It looks as if the Warriors will seal this series tonight so we won't find out who they put on game 7. I definitely enjoyed this finals more than any other finals series I've watched. Until next year, NBA.
