JV girls.

Got there 40 minutes early to talk with my semi-final partner. I changed, and as we just start pre-gaming, in comes another official with about 6 years experience.

His freshman game was called off (One school didn't have numbers and he was not notified), and he asked if he could work a three-whistle.

Well, I immediately said YES, then my partner said okay, and then all of a sudden there's this big pre-game thing starting when the new guy's partner from the cancelled freshman game showed up.

Well, NOW, I voted for stools in the corners, but we ended up doing a three. I and another partner had taught/trained tonight's partners in the past, and we faked fine, for a JV game. We probably had 38 years experience on the floor.

The Varsity game was a two-man using 1992 mechanics.

Last spring I had an AAU set in a gym with 2 courts going. Team A for my game didn't show so we went 4 man on the other game subbing in every 10 minutes or so. Worked fine and everybody got a full fee.

Hey, I might be able to remember how to do that. 1992 is when I broke in.

echo whistles
double direction points
mark the twos
mirror the threes
report right in front of the table

That was the first 5 minutes.
I learned what I needed.

I don't think we were taught to do that stuff. The thing I mainly remember is that we tried never to get stuck in a "reverse box". (That's still the mechanic for 2-whistle in the pros.)

C'mon Chuck, I spent the entire damn summer learning how to report in front of the table...

I've got everything else but the double direction point. What's that?

I'm guessing that means that the non-calling official mirrors his partner's direction signal on an OOB?

What? Mickey's teaching you to go directly in front of the table to report? I didn't get that at Hank Nichols' camp. . .

First, Mickey aint teachin' anything related to mechanics, you know that! :)

And yep, in front of the table, about half way between the sideline & center court. Where are you told to report from?

Dan, I don't think reporting area was ever even mentioned at Nationwide. I was assuming we'd clear the players and report, just like in the past. Huh. I better ask somebody around here about that.

The only time we don't go all the way to the table to report is when the L reverses the ball on a table side foul & becomes new T. Since he stays where he is (no switch) the reporting area is about at the 3rd/4th lane line position. Otherwise walk all the way across, either stop or do walk & talk as you go and continue on to new table side position. For me this made it a lot easier to stay table side, when I didn't go all the way across I had to fight the urge to go back opposite side...a few strategically placed "Dan! Get your @ss all the way over to report!" from you-know-who helped too! ;)

My First Official Game.

My Goodness. I was offered an on call job at a local gym for league nights. I show up about an hour or so prior to game time to discuss with my partner the rules we'd be applying, along with the gym's rules. I check in with management and they tell me I have no partner. WTF?!

By word of mouth, I kept hearing that rec ball is the absolute worst, so now I'm really nervous. But went ahead and ran with it solo. All I knew was to protect the shooter, abandonded the 3sec rule (obviously can't see everything), and of course, ref the defense!

Of course it had to be 69-69 with 10 secs left. I was just praying, please don't let me go into OT with these wolves! haha jk.

It went fine, was great!! =)

If you can do rec ball alone for your first game, and say it went great, you must be a natural. CONGRATULATIONS!!
