Women's NC: Notre Dame vs. UConn Discussion

Time for the annual "only a couple officials get a chance in women's basketball" thread! ;)

Refs: Dee Kantner, Denise Brooks, Mark Zentz (first male in the NC game since 2011)

For those brave enough to endure Doris Burke for two hours (or hit the mute button), post your thoughts here.

~ 4:10 of the first half - ND drive to the basket, contact, interesting no call.

A token male? Bestill my beating heart!

I referee my share of women's games and don't mind, and admit, to watching it on TV on occasion.

It's gotta be lonely dressing by yourself in the locker room. And no one to grab a beer with after!

The biggest problem, if you will, that I see in NCAAW officiating is not gender-based. It's the fact that you see the same officials in the Final Four every year. Kantner, I get it–she's a former NBA official and the supervisor of WNBA officials, almost hard to leave her out I guess. But some of the other faces (Brooks and Lisa Mattingly) seem to just get penciled in every year regardless. Tina Napier is another one that you can almost always guarantee, although she didn't even get a regional this year (?).

I'm sure other women's officials are more knowledgable than I am.

NCAA-W have the same selection process as the men's side. Conference supervisors submit names and then there is a committee that observes the officials, reviews video, etc. They then get graded round by round to advance.

I liked the no call at 4:10 of the 1st. Even after replay, I couldn't tell definitively what the defender did wrong. Zentz was right there looking at it and passed.
