Superb L help on high screen (GONZ vs OR ST) (Video)

Video request: Gonzaga vs Oregon State women, NCAA 2nd round. Game was on ESPN2, replay appears to be available on WatchESPN/ESPN3. Play occurs at 0:50 in 2nd half.

My WatchESPN login is broken (support is on that) but I want this clip because it's a fabulous illustration of something I've been pregaming all year long: when all offense is high, T and C have their hands full with basically all the matches, and screens between FTL and 3pt line are VERY difficult for the outside officials with so many bodies up high. The L in this case makes a VERY necessary call on a pretty bad screen in a case where T and C are both (correctly!) officiating other matchups. Fantastic call.

Thanks in advance, and many thanks for all the videos this season!

Agree...great and correct call.

It wan't like the lead had anything else to look at anyway. There were exactly 0 offensive players anywhere near the paint and only one defender in it except for the player using the screen that cut through the corner of it along with the defender trying to follow.

Easy call, but great get by the Lead.

Peace

Great call, and hell of a blitz pick-up by the tight end

Trail should have had a whistle as well.

Trail moved to A1 upon the catch.

IMHO, trail should be able to have both. That was the catcher's man-defender, who she was watching, if that's what she was watching prior to the catch.

Agreed. Nonetheless, it's a call that had to be made and someone did. This type of pick-up, imho, can push an official to a higher round.

Barlow really doesn't need any extra push to get to a higher round, but your point is valid.

The T "should" have had a whistle on this play. She stepped to where she could see the shooters feet and 3 point line and lost any angle she had on that screen. And as someone already said, the L had zero matchups in her primary to watch, so she extended out to where the post players actually were. It really was Barlow's call to make in this instance.

There's a difference between "This call is in T's primary and is his/her responsibility" (true) and "T really should have gotten this" (in my opinion, a stretch). T's 1st responsibility here is the would-be shooter, and T adjusts correctly to find feet and be ready for a defender coming. If I'm on this play, I certainly see the contact out of the corner of my eye, but I'm not sure where the screener came from (and thus if it was legal). I'd be hoping like hell for help. And, if Barlow were my partner, I'd get it

Not saying an outstanding T can't see this play. But that would be an insanely good get.

THANKS, APG, for putting this up. This is one of the best clips I've seen demonstrating good situations for extending the primary...

Agreed. Good stuff. Speaking of the calling official and moving on in the event, I can't find anything like the men's side official release announcing the Final Four officials. Anyone?

This was a great piece of officiating by the Lead. The players came from her area and she did not leave them. The Trail would have a hard time seeing this unless they were not watching the ball, which would have been hard to do considering the shooter is taking a near 3 point shot.

This is what I have heard called an "Action area." Where there are 3 or more players with the ball and the secondary official needs to help out and take a look to help out to catch screens, defensive plays and movement.

Peace

Yep...and no way C could see this action with players in between him and the screen. L's call all the way...
