The updated signal chart is now on the NFHS web site

Signal five, the birddog, now shows the word (Optional) under the pointing arm. It isn't immediately clear from the picture, however, that it's only the pointing arm that's optional. So...I'll ask a silly question. If I'm not birddogging on a foul call, I still DO have to raise my fist, don't I? It would cause a lot of confusion, I think, if I didn't.

Yeah, you're probably right. Only when I looked at the diagram, it really was not obvious that the optional part was just the pointing arm.
