NBA Referee Uniforms

Has anyone noticed the 14-15 alternate referee jerseys? I've only seen a couple of games with the crew wearing the jerseys. They are just like last years (with the black sleeves) except the number on the back is black instead of red. They are very rare, but I stumbled upon a USA today article that had some good pictures. Anyone know why the NBA is now allowing alternates?

The crew will wear last year's jerseys if one of the teams is wearing a jersey similar in color to the new jerseys.

Wow that makes so much sense. Thanks APG.. But I have to ask, how did you know that?

APG works in mysterious ways. Just don't get him started on game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals.

That is the exact answer I got from a well informed source.

I recall reading that it's also one of the reasons why NCAA and NFHS don't go to the "grey" shirt.

Evidently NC didn't get the word, Bob. ;)

I do recognize that different states (and maybe some lower-level ncaa / JuCo conferences, etc) can and do alter this. I *think* there were "national" proposals to allow the shirts

Nice!

And, how is your source? Doing well I trust!

I love the gray shirts. I hate striped shirts. Would love to see it move down to the HS level.

As soon as everyone gets to the gray shirts, there would be a movement to change to something else. Some people are not happy looking like everyone else and will want a change just to be different and make themselves stand out. And manufacturers would love it if we changed uniforms every year.

I agree. I just like how sharp the NBA uniform looks.

Baseball is bad about uniforms. There are about 3-4 different "generations" of uniforms in baseball now, some with multiple colors and patterns. Then throw in heavy jackets and light jackets and it's a mess. Majestic has yet again produced new MLB umpire uniforms for this year, further complicating the matter.
