I went to this game last night and there was a play at 5:22 of the second half that would be educational to review. High post player tries to pass to the low block player but the ball goes in the basket. The interesting part is there is a foul called against the defender on the low block before the ball goes in. It all happens bang-bang. The crew waived off the basket and called the foul.

as described, this is the correct call. It wasn't a try, so the ball becomes dead on the foul.

If the ball had already gone through the basket, then the foul would be ignored unless it was Intentional or Flagrant, and then it would be a T (those are the FED words; the NCAA is similar)

Sounds like the live ball that passed through the basket was not the result of a try for goal. So if a foul occurs while a try is not in flight, the ball becomes dead immediately.

I'd like to see it, but from your description it sounds like the officials ruled correctly.

And now...a question for an NCAA rules master: Try or not a try is a judgment call, so probably not reviewable. However, assuming you ruled "not a try," could you then go to the monitor to determine whether the ball passed through the basket before or after the foul? And if before, assuming the contact was neither flagrant nor technical, could you then erase the foul?

So I would like to know... If #3 doesn't get fouled he may have a chance to jump and get to the 'Pass'. But the ball is on the downward flight and has a chance to go in the basket. Goal tending? Or not because it isn't a 'Try'?
Isn't there an interp that describes an Ally-oop from behind the 3-pt arc that enters the basket will be awarded 3 points? If it is a pass, then how could it be awarded 3 points?

Goaltending only applies to a try or tap. Whenever a live ball enters the basket, a goal is scored whether or not it was a try or tap. A live ball thrown from behind the arc that enters the basket is three points.

Note that basket interference does NOT apply to only a try or tap.

Good point. If it is a pass, it is a pass. But, the rules/interpretations indicate that we are to aware 3 points. Yet, it doesn't go so far as to declare it a try just because it goes in. So, if a foul were to occur in such a case, it should be treated the same as if a foul occurs as in the video above....dead ball at the time of the foul.

NFHS rule Rule 5.2.1 deals with the behind the three point arc play.
NFHS rule 6.7.6 says if the ball hits a player on the head at the end of a clock - no score if it enters after the buzzer... I would hate to be trying to determine if it entered before or after a buzzer... Interestingly enough, this rule doesn't seem to at all deal with what happens if the ball enters and time doesn't expire?
Question: Do we wave off a ball that enters the basket by any means other than the hands in H.S.?
And back to the initial issue: If the post player being fouled in the video made contact with that pass and tipped it in, while attempting to gather the ball - would it also be waved off?

I think by rule this was probably ruled correctly...

But I also think the rule in this instance is awful.

It would depend on whether the foul occured before or after the tip. It would still be a pass until the point where it was tapped, and a foul would cause the ball to become dead. If the tipped ball was judged to be a try for goal and the foul occured after the try, then the basket would be counted.
