Hello,

My name is Andrew Wagner, I am a member of a research team at Gannon university in the doctor of physical therapy program. We are lead by faculty member Dr. Steve Bitticker. We have developed a survey intended to provide us with a better understanding of the girls basketball officials role in injury prevention. I am emailing in an attempt to procure participants for our study. The survey is completely online and takes less than 5 minutes to complete, all responses will be kept anonymous. Any email addresses provided will not be used for any reason except to distribute the survey, they will be deleted upon completion of the study.

I don't work girls/women's basketball and I have no interest in completing your survey. However, I will tell you that an official has no role in preventing injuries in basketball at any level. If an injury occurs because a player is fouled, an official is not going to have a whistle or call on that play until after the foul/injury has already occurred. The fact that I may or may not have a call or whistle on that play does not influence the play or its outcome in any manner. Any action that I may or may not take will occur after the incident has already occurred.

It happens every day. When a player is injured, nine times out of ten, it's because "the officials let the game get out of hand."

I doubt there's a survey question which does this justice.

Other than enforcing the rules regarding the wearing of jewelry and other items, the only thing we do to "prevent" injuries is eject any player that intentionally causes an injury so that they can't cause another one.

I took the survey (because I just couldn't resist wanting to see what questions were in it and I didn't have anything better to do because I was having troubler sleeping tonight, :p) and it made no sense what so ever. I did make a copy of the survey's questions.

First
shows a complete lack of understanding of the role of a basketball official or official in any sport

Second

This will never get any statistically valid results or samples. I wonder what this University actually teaches

I agree with Mark. Made no sense what so ever.

I just took it and I absolutely agree with the others that the people who made this thing up do not have the correct understanding of the role of the official at a game. We are there to administer the rules, not act as the kid's "Daddies" and keep them from getting a "boo boo".

They ought to give this questionnaire to parents and coaches.

I took the survey...didn't take long. There were a few questions about concussions.

There was enough space to clarify that officials are there to enforce the rules, not make people coaches, fans, etc. happy.

Some rules are in place are to reduce the likelihood of injury. When play is stopped for an injury, we do make them come out of the game.

I'm not sure if the survey author understands that we rely on trainers to determine whether players that have hit their heads have a concussion or not.

Gannon University Focus Group

I received an email yesterday afternoon asking, that since I had completed the survey, if I would like to take part in a focus group with regard to the survey.

Since I drank the kool aide (and retired, :D) I have no choice but to take part in the focus group, thereby carrying in to battle the hopes and dreams of every member who also took the survey.

I will keep everybody posted with regard to what happens in the focus group.
