Virginia/UNC block/charge play (Video)

There was a block/charge play called a charge against Virginia by Jamie Luckie. I only saw it on Twitter and didn't get a time. Jay Bilas called it "absurd." Can anyone help out?

Occurred with about seven seconds remaining in the first half.
There was significant left to right movement by the defender while the offensive player was airborne. I thought it was a clear blocking foul.

Also the shot clock reset at 9:12 of the second half (replay at 7:08) is a play of interest and instructive. I agree with the reset. A one-handed catch and throw by UNC player.

Mr. Bilas: "That can't count as a possession!" "That makes no sense at all."

then he followed it with "You are going to charge Paige with a turnover on that play since he gained possession??"

Good call on the first. Defender clearly out of the RA, had LGP. The shooter was out of control with no where to go and was just praying for someone to bail him out.

Then second looks like a catch and throw to me...team control changed....clock resets.

I don't know about college, but in high school this looks like a block to me. Defender wasn't at the spot before the shooter left his feet. I think.

ballgame99 Fri Feb 06, 2015 09:14am

I have a block there. LGP does not appear to have been established.

JRutledge Fri Feb 06, 2015 09:17am

I have a block on the first play. The player is still moving to cut him off when he goes in the air.

The second play I have no problem with the reset.

Peace

First play had three different angles. From the first two angles, (sideline and endline) it looked like a block. I can see the arguement for a PC based on the 3rd (overhead) view though, if you believe that the defender had LGP early on and moved laterally to maintain it.

I have a clear throw on the second play, good shot clock reset.

Remember that the rule for LGP isn't that the defender can't be moving but that the defender can't move into the path after the shooter is airborne.

I believe this one is incredibly close but I do believe he did get into the path with both feet down just as the shooter left the floor. Additional lateral movement is not relevant as it doesn't create the contact.

1) Wow, that's a block and it's not even close. Jamie is very big into film study, I'm sure he went straight to the video as soon as he got the chance and wishes he had that back.

2) TC control established on the save.
