Sub jumping the gun

I worked with a new, inexperienced partner recently. We had an unusual experience in a JVB game recently (same one that went to OT recently).

My partner has a common foul on A-1 in the backcourt. Team B is in the double bonus, so as my partner is reporting the foul, we go to the opposite end for B-2 to shoot two. Just before I administer, there's a time-out request (60 seconds).

During the time-out, my partner informs me of this: While my partner was in the reporting area, subs B-6 and B-7 tried to come in from the table. (There was no horn.) B-6 was stopped and sent back to the table, but B-7 made it through. After the foul was reported, my partner went to Coach B and said the sub can't come in yet, so B-7 had to go back, and B-3 had to come back the floor.

I was asked whether this was handled correctly, or there should be a technical foul on B-7. I offered that that T probably should have been called while B-7 was in the act, but I thought it was too late after getting B-3 back in. Besides, if I'm not mistaken, B-7 could get into the game during the time-out, anyway, yes?

Thoughts? Thanks.

It's a dead ball. Who cares, get the sub back out, call the TO, then the sub can re-enter.

This should not be a T for what you described. I have no clue what B7 made it through means, was this a maginot line of like 20 officials holding back players?

Just get B7 back out and remind him to wait to be beckoned, then administer the TO.

Embarrass the kid by hitting your whistle, dragging him (don't take this literally) back to the 'X' and pointing for him to stand on it. Then invite him in at the proper time. If the team has a problem waiting for us to beckon the next time, T.

Send B7 back to the table. The ball is dead. Common sense officiating.

Exactly. Don't trouble trouble.

The only scenarios where I can imagine calling a sub T involve either a sub running on during play (I've called this once) or a flat refusal to return to the table.

If the suits in your association want this T called, then do it. Otherwise, this is just looking for trouble.

Ever have a table that tried to tell you that you couldn't bring a sub in cause "he didn't properly report?"

Those people can be cute.

I just smile and nod after I've already brought the sub in.

If you're asking if subs can enter during the timeout when two shots are to follow, the answer is yes.

Right, so it's pretty much a moot point, anyway.

Now I'm wondering whether the coach called a time-out to get him in. I thought it was an unusual time for a TO.

I always have an issue at one school I work -- they're *really* slow on the horn, so I don't wait -- I whistle the subs in. Then they'll blow the horn and expect that I'll return the sub to them so they can "properly report."

Anyone can see that the sub was in front of the table and that 24 replaced 10 -- I'm not sure what they're looking for.

I just continue to do what I do and they continue to get annoyed.

Why would he need a timeout to get him in if there were about to be 2 FTs? So he coudl look intimidating on the lane during the first one?

Would that be disconcerting? ;)

Let's say you noticed one of your players subbing in illegally, and the ball is dead. If you get a time-out before the officials realize the illegal sub, that sub no longer would need to be beckoned.

Admittedly, it's not very likely the coach was thinking that way, but it's a workable theory, nonetheless.
