Last night on EspnU (Video)

Block called with 5.3 left in the second half of the BYU USF game that should have gone the other way. The cynic in me thinks the time on the clock may have contributed to the call.

Probably much less interesting for the video (and I don't have the time anyway), but out of bounds call near the end of the Murray State Eastern Kentucky game, the ball was knocked out, EKU's coach made an offense defense substitution and then they switched the call to give the ball to the other team. EKU's coach argued rather stridently to get his players back in since he subbed in response to the call. Rule change needed or should they have allowed it?

At regular speed - I would no call. Think defender embellished contact. In slow-mo?

JRutledge Fri Feb 06, 2015 08:39am

I got a charge. Yes I think he embellished, but I also think he was contacted and displaced. The defender was certainly in LGP.

Peace

PC foul. The defender threw his head back, probably to avoid getting elbowed in the face, but was displaced by the offensive player.

PC all the way.

ballgame99 Fri Feb 06, 2015 11:39am

Easy PC. You could maybe justify a no call there, but definitely not a block. What could the L have done differently here? His angle and look is horrible. Maybe pinch down since the ball is going to the rack in that situation? And would it be unacceptable for the C to help there?

2nd look, PC. Not sure why I thought no call when I first saw it. Lead did not have a good angle.

Camron Rust Fri Feb 06, 2015 12:24pm

Textbook LGP....can't possibly be a block.

It could be a PC and probably should be but I wouldn't be too upset with a no-call.

La Rikardo Fri Feb 06, 2015 12:30pm

I have a PC foul here, but I could live with no foul. Certainly not a block.

Pinching the paint would have made it worse b/c of the other players in the area. Stepping out would have given him a better angle.

AremRed Fri Feb 06, 2015 02:44pm

No call.

mutantducky Fri Feb 06, 2015 06:27pm

no call. Some minor contact, whatever. Just let that one go.
best to watch this one on regular speed. Sure it looks like a PC on slo-mo but I think the no call would have been the right way to go here.

That looks to me like the elbow actually does contact the head.

I actually think this is a pretty intriguing question. If it's me, I would allow the coach to revoke those subs. I've been looking, and can't find a rule basis or a case play for this, but common sense tells me to let him pull them back out. What does everyone else think about this part?
