New Study Guide/Test Questions
I just got a call from my assignment secretary. The head state guy had called him and they're wanting to make a new study guide for next year. This will be a list of true/false questions (I don't know how many) to be used for study and then a portion of which will be randomly selected for the test. Each association has been asked to submit 10 questions, and he offered the task to me, which I accepted. I find this flattering, and needless to say, this board gets a large portion of the credit. I asked how obscure we wanted to be with the questions, and was told to not try for the once in a lifetime situations, but rather just things that not just anybody off the street could answer.
So, having said all that, if anybody has a suggestion for just such a question, I would certainly give it my full attention. Thanks again, guys. To everybody here, whether we get along or not, it wouldn't be the same without you. __________________ |
So there will be a question about spin moves? :D

You write it up for us and I'll see what I can do. |

I've got the first one already.
There is no such thing as a blarge. true |

I actually don't even know what that is. seriously I'm pretty sure it is a term used to complain when a travel is called. You know, like a "crab dribble." (only heard that one the one time) |

Unicorns and the Euro Step ... they don't exist. |
True/False A defender needs to be stationary ("set") to take a charge.
How about wording it like that? |

Also, young officials when they first learn the term LGP, think that it is the key to everything. True or False It is impossible for A1 to commit a player control foul on B1 if B1 does not have legal guarding position. |
See my edited post above.

Gonna go with this one, which I've seen done incorrectly 3 or 4 times at the varsity level this year.
A1's errant pass is chased into the backcourt by A2, who recovers it at the free throw line. Ruling: B's ball at the division line. |
True/False When resuming play with a throw-in, the rules pertaining to ten seconds in the backcourt, three seconds in the free throw lane, and backcourt violations do not apply until after an inbounds player secures control of the ball.

This is good. I believe this question was on the guide last year with the exception that it said these things didn't apply during the throw-in. Important to know that this is also true. |
Some will probably enjoy seeing this in black and white:
True or false: By rule, the team members in uniform on the bench and the assistant coach are subject to the same restrictions on behavior. |

It is a thing, and its legality depends (as always) on when the player gathers the ball and establishes his pivot foot. The Euro step is colloquially used by players and coaches alike to describe an illegal action which they saw in an NBA game and assumed was legal at their level as well. Here is an excellent video documenting the Euro step. Quote:

An example play: A1 is dribbling in the backcourt. He throws a pass to A2 who is standing in Team A's frontcourt. The ball strikes A2 in the shoulder and rebounds into the backcourt where A3 is the first to touch it. Ruling: Backcourt violation In fact, Team A doesn't even have to touch the ball in the frontcourt in order to violate. See rule 9-9-2 and swap an official for A2 in the above play for an example. However, you are correct that the current text of the NFHS rules is flawed with respect to team control on throw-ins and backcourt violations. Unfortunately, it has been that way for a few years now. :( |
Two more ?s for you
Endline running question:
After Team B scores, A1 secures the ball and steps out of bounds for the throw-in. B1 crosses the endline and fouls A1. True/False: Following the FTs for B1's intentional personal foul, Team A will retain the right to run the endline on the ensuing throw-in. Team Control foul question: A1 is dribbling in his backcourt when B1 bats the ball away. As A1 and B1 chase the loose ball, A1 commits a pushing foul against B1. True/False: This is a team control foul. |
Fashion Police questions
If you want any fashion police questions:
1. True/False A player may legally wear a headband with the NBA logo. 2. True/False A player from the home team may legally wear gray tights. 3. True/False A player may wear an arm sleeve that is half white and half red. |
The Plot Thickens ...

Tights extend below the knee. Compression shorts do not. Two different items. Very clearly stated in the rules. |
I'll Take Rulebook, Or Casebook ...

(I am already aware that the NFHS is looking into this inconsistency in the rules.) |

They're looking to create more inconsistency? |

I think this is the list I'm going to send. I tried to go with a combination of common misconceptions, things I have seen called incorrectly, and some "just cuz." If anybody sees any way this could be better, speak up.
1. A defender must be stationary to take a charge. False 2. It is not possible to commit a player control foul if the defender does not have legal guarding position. False 3. A1 throws a bad pass which goes into the backcourt. A2 chases it down and recovers the ball at the free throw line. Ruling: B's ball at the division line. False 4. A1 dribbles near the division line. B1 bats the ball which goes off the leg of A1 and into the backcourt, where it is recovered by A2. Ruling: Backcourt violation True 5. When resuming play with a throw-in, the rules pertaining to ten seconds in the backcourt, three seconds in the free throw lane, and backcourt violations do not apply until after an inbounds player secures control of the ball. True 6. An assistant coach is subject to the same conduct restrictions as team members in uniform on the bench. True 7. A1 is fouled by B1 as time expires in the first quarter. Before the free throws are shot, the head coach for B receives a technical foul. Ruling: A1 will shoot the one and one for the personal foul. Then any player from team A will shoot the technical foul. Team A will have a throw-in to start the second quarter which is not an AP throw-in. False 8. During a fast break, A1's pass is mishandled by A2. A2 bobbles the ball while taking several more steps. He then catches the ball and lays it up. Ruling: No violation, basket is good. True 9. When a player ends a dribble, if that player is starting a try, it changes the restrictions on his pivot foot. False 10. Jump ball to start the game. A1 takes a position near the sideline. Before the ball is tossed, A1 breaks toward the basket. Ruling: Violation False |
