FT disconcertion

Worked a girls JV game last night where we had the following:

Line up to shoot 2, nuthin' out of the ordinary on the 1st throw. On the second throw, after the shooter gets the ball at the line, the girl in the highest lane space picks up her leg to take a Nazi-march-step into the lane. As the shooter is beginning her act of shooting, the defender almost falls forward with leg extended. In my opinion, it was done deliberately with the intent to disconcert.

The sticky point for me was, even though she was above/in the lane, she never touched the floor before the shooter released the ball.

I called a violation anyway, let the shooter have a redo, and we went from there.

No one complained, shooter or coach, but I thought I would see if anyone would disagree with this being a deliberate disconcerting effort?

According to Rule 9-3 Art. 3g "a player occupying a marked lane space my not have either foot beyond the vertical plane of the outside edge of the space designated by the lane-space marks."

So it sounds like she violated, even if it was judged it wasn't disconcertion, since it's likely her foot broke that vertical plane.

HTBT but it sounds like a good call.

you got it right. the question you have to ask on disconcertion is "Did the defense do something which would distract the free thrower?" it doesn't have to be deliberate/intentional. also, disconcertion doesn't require someone touching the lane before the ball is released.

Neither does a simple lane violation. See BryanV's post.

Agreed, the violation for entering the lane is the low hanging fruit here. Get that.

Honestly, I'm not noticing if the low hanging fruit is the first thing to enter the lane.

It was a girls game, so it wasn't an issue.

Sometimes that fruit hangs low, too -- especially as the females get older. ;)

Where's a mod when you need one? I've got visuals I can't unsee. Please, please, for the love of Pete, close this thread.
