PA Announcer

Quick Question:

If NFHS states that an announcer cannot "announce" while the clock is running...

When would the announcer "announce" a NON-EMPHATIC 2 pt. or 3 pt. goal?

[Not that I really care, but last night there was a big disagreement with the site AD and the girls Varsity Officials, before our BV game, on this subject.]

Also, GV Official threatened with a Technical Foul??

I should have used the "Search" function before I posted...(got lazy)....

My take on the ealier posts is what I expected...another vague rule to enforce.

One poster summed it up IMO...

"The rule is vague, so I doubt my state will care if my enforcement is vague."

The NFHS website has announcer responsibility section. when you click on it there will be a list of what can and what should not be announced. below that list will be statements of when the things that are acceptable can be announced. nothing can be announced (unless emergency) while the clock is running. also, nothing can be announced while the clock is stopped and the ball is live. i.e. once ball handed to a fee thrower or a thrower in.

i hear what you and others are saying when you/they look at the list of what can be announced but the section on WHEN things can be announced is clear imo.
the non emphatic 2 or 3 would be allowed after you call a foul or at end of quarter, or after a timeout called. clock would be stopped and ball would be dead. (after all activity ends..)

That is kind of the point...

It may be clear...but, it does not make sense.

IOW, the announcer can SOMETIMES announce a 2 pt or 3 pt FG.
(depending on if the clock is running or not)

I have to admit that if the announcer can't announce who scored a basket while the clock is running, there's really almost no need for an announcer during the game.

From my former role as a statistician and announcer, I understand the rationale behind the emphasis and guidelines. However, if enforced to the letter, this seems to go a bit too far in the other direction. I'd be in favor of allowing non-emphatic information about who scored a basket--"Basket by #23, Sarah Smith"--as it happens as the only information to be permitted when the clock is running (with the current allowance for emergencies).

NFHS has killed a horse and continues to beat it. I don't see what the problem is with an announcer being slightly partisan. That being said, I am a huge Chicago Bulls fan and grew up listening to Ray Clay introduce my basketball hero MJ. I see nothing wrong the announcer being slightly more emphatic when the home team scores. It is, after all, a 'home game'.

NFHS' notion that the PA announcer should be a "champion of character" is absolutely ridiculous.

PA announcers should not give play-by-play.They should also not give a recap of the play after it happened like they do in football. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a PA announcer mentioning "Bulls foul on # 23 Michael Jordan, his 3rd personal, team foul # 5" does nothing to detract from the game and also helps increase the crews game awareness.

The rule was probably designed to prevent "And 1" or "NBA" style announcing. But they should have just said that.
