Bench Conduct

A few items have been kicked around about bench conduct and what if any penalties apply:

1) Bench is counting down shot clock for their OWN team

2) Bench is counting down shot clock for OTHER team but doing so in an inaccurate way

3) Bench yells out "AND ONE"

Thanks!

1) If you were going to penalize this, what would you call?

2) Instance #1 = "Coach, your players can't do that." Instance #2 = T.

3) Assuming there was no foul call and they're complaining, see answer #2.

I agree with the Jet fan from New Jersey.

But, has anyone here ever called this? And if so, what was the reaction of the coach, the players, the crowd, the game administration, your supervisors?

I don't recall ever having seeing situation #2 in a game but I suspect the HC would tell his/her bench to knock it off. I'm basing my answer on situation #3 which I have had during a game and the HC told the bench personnel to knock it off.

Most HCs know if you tell them to tell their bench personnel to stop doing something the next encounter - if there is one - won't end well.

I've had situation #2 -- and handled it just like JetMetFan said. Coach told the players to knock it off. No one else said anything.

I usually will tell the players on the bench that they are soft if they think that play was an "And 1". That usually works as the kids laugh. If it continues I will address the HC and 99% of the time they will tell their players to knock it off. ....

I would not address the players on the bench. Always let the head coach know to get control of things.

If I have any issue with bench personnel, player or coaches, I tell the coach to get them in order. That's usually a sign that the next time its going to cost them 2 FT's, and 100% of the time they self police it.
