What a day...

Sub-varsity preseason tournament today. Each school plays three games. Two sites. Three officials at each site, four games apiece. At my site...

1) Scoreboard wasn't working, so clock was kept at the table. Yikes. We had no idea if they actually kept time the right way.

2) The tournament director didn't provide an official scorer and only one school assigned a competent adult. So for three of the six games, we were having to babysit the varsity basketball players working at the table. Wouldn't look at us when we reported a foul, were cutting up with their buddies the whole time, didn't let us know when subs were at the table, didn't time the timeouts and intermissions properly, just to name a few. Argh. In one of the games, the scorer didn't start over his foul tally for the second half! We ended up erroneously shooting a 1-and-1 in that game but had passed the correctable error timeframe before FINALLY figuring out that he hadn't been tracking fouls correctly.

3) The fashion police had to be in full force for illegal undershirts and sleeves, in particular. One coach had a player with a hard cast on his arm and thought covering it up with gauze would suffice!

4) It was clear that most of the coaches had not prepared their players for the new rules.

5) In the final game, one team didn't score a point in the first half. The head coach, who had already been warned about behavior in an earlier game, decided he would officiate for us in the second half by complaining on every possession. Late in the third quarter, he loudly stated, "I'll officiate this game for y'all." That was the final straw. Whack.

It's good to be back!

I would have chosen the smartass response...

"Coach, since you're going to officiate the game for us, why don't I coach your team since your strategy clearly hasn't been working?"

I would have talked through the head coach and made sure the AC heard me. That usually works.

Peace

It was the head coach who I whacked, not an assistant. Did you mean to post this on the other discussion?
