Jackets pre game

What's the point of wearing them?

I know it's been done in the past forever but does that mean it needs to be done forever in the future?

We are inside.... Most guys i know especially under 40 (90% or more) would just rather go without.

Unfortunetly i dont see it changing anytime soon.

BryanV21 Thu Nov 13, 2014 05:07pm

I don't understand it either. Especially having to pay $65 for it, and only wearing it for like 20 minutes a night.

Rich Thu Nov 13, 2014 05:55pm

Not all of our gyms are warm.

I'm a fan of the jackets. Always have been. One game fee and a jacket should last for years.

Jacket opinions around here are not age dependent.

It looks professional. Why bother to wear black socks? Does it really make a difference in how well you officiate? Of course not, but it's part of the "package". For the past thirty-three years, and, hopefully, several more to come, they could tell me to wear a cummerbund, and I would. Let's see, games fees over several decades, for the cost of a few jackets (or cummerbunds)? Easy decision. Plus, without the jacket, where would I keep my inflation pin?

bob jenkins Thu Nov 13, 2014 07:58pm

Optional in NCAAW. I always vote NOT to wear it.

I have a suggestion.

Raymond Thu Nov 13, 2014 08:09pm

I have some gyms that are real cold and I put it on at halftime.

JRutledge Thu Nov 13, 2014 08:45pm

I would rather wear jackets than not wear jackets. They look sharp and not every place is warm as stated.

Peace

Nice! Post of the day.

AremRed Thu Nov 13, 2014 11:25pm

I like jackets, they keep me comfortable in drafty gyms and look sharp. I like being undercover a bit until the tip -- I think just wearing stripes can be distracting during pregame warmups.

I agree, jackets have been de riguer, and I've never bothered to ask why it is necessary. I prefer to wear mine at the proper times (pregame, half time, post game), I like the quasi-anonymity it provides---tho everyone knows I am the ref tho ( I mean what else would that guy standing at halfcourt talking with another guy dressed the same way be doing aside from reffing the game? lol). I do like the warmth it provides during halftime and the cover it provides quick juant to my car after the game tho.

Rich Fri Nov 14, 2014 12:01pm

I never put mine on at halftime.

Matter of fact, I take mine off and fold it inside out before giving it to the table personnel to keep dirt off of it. Mine gets washed rarely. I never wear mine after I've worked, so there's no sweat put in it.

There is a "why" for everything. That does not mean that "why" is something you have to like. Players wear warm-ups and not their uniform on the outside. We do the same. And we have an option just like the teams or the players. Not sure we need a specific reason one way or the other.

Peace

One board I work with requires them for varsity only, optional at JV. I had a JV girls game last year at a very small school and my partner flipped out on me because I didn't have a jacket. He said he was a varsity official and if I wanted to be one too, I should dress the part.

I wonder if I should call the foul from 50' away like he did too? I'm lead A33 is off ball right in front me and puts a hand on B1, no big deal. Partner calls A33 for a foul. A23 was just in front of him when he made the call. He reports and the scorer says you mean 2-3 correct? He says no, 3-3, I had it all the way.

The second paragraph isn't really relevant. Get a jacket.

*OK, so you are telling us that the score table folks who are faculty/staff actually serve as your personal "coat/cloak check" minders--in much the same way the fine ladies do for me when I go to ruth chris steakhouse in the winter when I give them my leather trenchcoat prior to seated dining?
Wow!

Don't wear part of your uniform to the car. Put it away and put your regular clothes back on.

Where the hell do you think our jackets go?

I fold mine and hand it to the person at the table that takes it and either puts it on an empty spot on the table or somewhere under/behind the table.

A few schools have someone who take our jackets to the locker room for us, but most of them give them to us as we're heading back at halftime.

Really, two/three guys standing on the sideline wearing matching jackets, watching the players warm up is staying undercover?

I always scratch my head at the whole "invisibility" meme.

*Well, based on what you're saying, I must say that I am surprised by the cordiality extended to you by those personnel in that they would care for your clothes like a servant. But hey don't take it the wrong way OK, I should be enamored by such!

Every school I go to will take our jackets and put them on the scorers table or in a spot behind the table. No exaggeration, every school.

zm1283 Fri Nov 14, 2014 05:31pm

Yep. Every school I've been to does the same thing. If they don't offer you just hand the jackets to them and they get the hint.

What do you think we do with the jackets?

grunewar Fri Nov 14, 2014 07:03pm

Most of our games include someone from our association on the clock. We just give them our jackets and they put them on the back of their chair and hand them to us at half time. We usually don't put them on as we depart at half time.

If we don't have a clock op, we give them to someone at the table. Never had a problem.

I like wearing the jackets prior to the game. It's the way we do business.

DRJ1960 Fri Nov 14, 2014 09:49pm

Every so often a score keeper will drape my jacket over their chair... while wearing about $50 of $2 perfume.....

No, but I think stripes catch the eye more than black jackets.

Plus taking off my jacket makes me feel like a superhero taking off their street clothes.

We don't wear jackets at all during the regular season here in North Texas. I wish we did, but it's just not done. We did have to buy them because we will be wearing them for playoff games. Seems silly to only wear them then, but whatever - I just do what I'm told.

In my area jackets are required for all varsity games, otional at other levels.

Welpe Mon Nov 17, 2014 10:46pm

Down here they are required but I've seen crews opt to go without them anyways. Now that nobody seems to be making TASO embroidered jackets, I have a feeling they're going to start going away as we get more new blood in the organizations. Or they'll require a special, $75 jacket similar to what they're doing to us in football.

JMUplayer Tue Nov 18, 2014 09:42am

If the objective is they look sharp and that's the main reason i'm hearing shouldn't they have been updated sometime in the past 20-30 years. My dad wore the same ugly style jacket in the 80s.

For $75-$100 i can get a much nicer under armor or nike warm up that actually looks good/current.

At least the shiny "trash bag" style jackets that button all the way up the front have mostly disappeared. I started in 2007 and that was what I had then. I wore it for a year and got a Smitty zip-up non-shiny jacket.

I would love to wear a more athletic looking warmup though. I like the NBA jackets. NBA now selling referee jackets | Crossover Chronicles

I like the NBA uniforms in general really.
