5th Foul

A1 fouls B1 for A1's 5th foul (the basket is good). B1's attempt is in the air and the table becomes aware A1 has 5 fouls (2-11-5 Note covers this procedure) However, what if B gains control of the rebound and A1 commits his 6th foul? Is it just common?

If the table notified the officials while the ball was in the air (sounded the horn), the ball becomes dead when the free throw ends. Any subsequent contact by A1 would be ignored unless intentional or flagrant.

If the ball was still live when A1 contacted B1 on the rebound, it would just be a common foul. You can't penalize A1 or the coach with a technical foul because A1 is not disqualified until the coach is notified by an official, who must be notified by the table.

since you suggested they hit the horn while in flight you didn't read 2-11-5 note did you?

Assuming he did not slug him or foul him excessively it is just a common foul. A player in the game, even improperly, is still a player….normal rules apply.

If a player is disqualified and later checks back into the game and actually participates he is removed immediately when it is figured out. also, if it is simply a mistake (not sure how it would be) he is removed and no penalty. if it is deemed attempt to circumvent rules coach gets a T.

also, the timer blowing the horn does not mean the ball will become dead at the end of the free throw as another person suggested. an official would need to blow their whistle. officials can ignore the horn if they choose…thx

I didn't suggest they hit the horn while the ball is in flight. I said "if." And based on your statement "B1's attempt is in the air when the table becomes aware..." it's reasonable that they could have hit the horn with the ball in the air. You didn't specify the moment that the table notified the officials.

Do you expect most scorers to know 2-11-5 Note?

BigCat, I think you would agree with me that if the horn blows while a free throw is in flight, an official is probably not going to ignore it and is going to figure out what the issue is.

And, if a disqualified player reenters the game, that's a direct technical foul to the head coach. It doesn't matter if he entered "by mistake."

I would go with this...

I agree we don't ignore it. just saying it, the horn doesn't make it dead. what usually happens is everyone freezes….

and my screw up on the other. if the player reports to the table after being disqualified, enters the game but is figured out to be disqualified before the ball becomes live you have a choice.

you are correct that once ball becomes live there is no choice. T. again my screwup. thx for correcting
