And I'm not kidding. It's true.
I know you are not kidding, because I have seen this up close and personal.

There are some private schools in my area that used to do this on a regular basis. The practice was outlawed by the IHSA, but there are some rare occations this still takes place for some oldtimers. I have been offered but never took a school or AD up on this opportunity.

Peace

Kansas Ref- what part of the state are you in?

Here in SE Kansas- V doubleheader BV/GV is 100/3 whistle, 115/2 whistle in the last conference that refuses to go 3. I think JV is 75/2 whistle doubleheader. No mileage.

In Alabama:
Varsity - $55/game (always 3 officials)
JV - $40/game (3); $45/game (2)
MS - $35/game (3); $40/game (2)
Clock operator (if an official) - $25/game

Mileage - $8.00 per official, flat rate ($10.00 if over 60 miles)

Most HS dates in our area consist of 3 games - JV boys, V girls, V boys - all worked by the same crew, so $150 + mileage for a night's work.

too much lol!

My word! Even the Catholics do better than that! When I do their 8th grade games our crew always gets yummay orange slices, trailmix, and a blessings.

Yes one official only. This is an agreement of our organization with our schools. We are encouraged to ride together. If this isn't possible the officials usually work out some sort of mileage split between them. Some school will pay both officials for mileage but is not required. If the officials ride together the unwritten rule is the driving official is responsible for post game snacks and beverages.

Oregon has something similar.

The schools pay for one mileage. Each organization decides how they split it among the crew. In more rural areas it is often all to 1 who is expect to drive. In metro areas, it is often divided equally among the crew (the bigger the crew, the smaller the mileage amount) since riding together is often not feasible.

Addendum ...

Addendum to Connecticut:

150% game fee if an official works alone.

Are games actually assigned with only one official or just because of an emergency and it couldn't be filled?

I've worked at a private school that has done this for our crew, as well.

Here in my little corner of Connecticut, we often have difficulty assigning mid-afternoon middle school, and freshman high school, games. Rarely, they may only be assigned a single official.

The usual reason for only one official is a screwup, by the assigner, or by the an official, or a last minute illness, or injury, or other extenuating circumstances (traffic, car accident, flat tire, etc.).

We actually have some written guidelines for one person mechanics.

I'm on boards in ME and NH and haven't started working in NH where there are considerably fewer officials available so that may indeed happen but in Maine everything from 7th grade up is always 2 person unless there is an emergency.

Games where a second official is unavailable are moved to a day/time where a second official can work.

I worked a JVG game solo for a quarter last winter due to my partner being an idiot and it wasn't easy to do. Arguably when he showed up it didn't get much better but at least I didn't have to run as many weird patterns to get coverage.

We got a $5/game raise this year for all levels. Our fees go by the quarter length.

8 min: $60
7 min: $50
6 min: $40

We add on $15 if we have to go somewhere for only one game. The vast majority of assignments are JV/V doubleheaders.

40 cents/mile for one driver, round trip. We will split mileage if both people have to drive for some reason, but we usually ride together.

I'm not sure about football, but most of the other sports got similar raises this school year. I know softball and baseball went to $60 for varsity games and $50 for JV games.
