If we all could be so fortunate to have that reputation when the time comes to hang it up. Great perspective on why we do what we do. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds like a great ref and a great guy. Hope he has a really enjoyable retirement.

Congratulations to Chan. Unfortunately I hasten to hold such an esteemed and benevolent perspective towards the players, coaches and fans as Chan did during his tenure as a sofballand hoops ref. Yet, from my perch what I see on a regular basis is about 40% of good and well-meaning coaches, players, and fans [henceforth abbreviated as "CFPs" in this post] and 60% of wussified, entitlement-expecting, lack-of-fundamentals, and selfish-minded CFPs. I'm sure that on my "Referee Gravestone/Obituary" I will be remembered as the ref who was fair but not friendly, professional but not personable, and as one who could care less about the CFPs after the game was over. But I digress, your post was to celebrate chan the ref and his retirement.
