Get Back in the Box, Then Whack
In today's Phoenix/Minnesota WNBA playoff game, here's a sequence of events I found curious:
*Minnesota coach is out of the coaching box, complaining and giving the wave-off gesture. *Official, with the stop sign up, tells the coach to get back in the box. *Coach gets back in box, both feet firmly inside in the lines, facing the official. *Whack. If someone wants to find the video, it's at the 5:38 mark of the second quarter, caught perfectly on replay. |
Sounds like someone was asserting control.

Coach was being a dick about getting back in the box. I don't think the official was planning on whacking her if she get back in respectfully. I'm probably wrong though, being out of the box is pretty much an auto-whack in the NBA, and I assume the WNBA as well.

The coach did a very emphatic one-two step back into the box, stomping her feet with her hands outstretched in a WTF gesture.
A much deserved T. |
I'll post later but it was a case of "it's not what the coach did but how she did it." Minnesota's coach was trying to show up the official. She played the game and she lost.

Here it is...one more thing to consider is the context. Taurasi had received a T about 1:00 of playing time earlier for complaining about a (correct) non-call. There's a chance the crew's "nonsense" meter was in the red by this time.

Wiggity-WHACK!
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Enjoy your Lipton's, coach. |
A 'T' for being an a$$-hat...good
|
"What are you going to do, give me another T?"
"Whack" "Wait, what?" |
I enjoyed the mouth open deer in the headlights look. She got what she asked for.
|
I've seen too many officials walk away from that T. Good on her.
|
Strong work right there.
